He was originally a Japanese army officer and spy. During his service, he lived in Russia for a time under the assumed name of Koichi Hasegawa, posing as a photographer.
There, he married and started a family—he had a wife and a young daughter.
During a clash between revolutionaries and the Russian secret police, a shootout occurred, and his wife and child were killed by a stray bullet.
After this tragedy, Tsurumi became obsessed with revenge and grand political plans. He returned to the army and decided to find Ainu gold, using it to build his own power and change the balance of power in the region.
During the Russo-Japanese War, he suffered a severe head wound (due to an explosion), which left part of his skull damaged—hence his famous forehead plate.
Results:
The family tragedy and the war changed him greatly. From a relatively ordinary man and spy, he transformed into a cold, ambitious, and obsessive leader willing to use people to achieve his goals.
