What about gold?
Originally, it was Ainu gold, stolen by one of their own—a man nicknamed Nopperabo (also Asirpa's father).
He killed his accomplices and hid the gold.
He was caught and imprisoned in Abashiri Prison.
To transmit the location, he encrypted a map in the prisoners' tattoos.
Result:
There are 24 prisoners.
Each has a piece of the map.
To obtain the complete map, you need to collect them all (or literally peel off the skin with the tattoos).
How are the "prisoners" connected?
The prisoners are not random people, but carriers of pieces of a single, larger puzzle:
Each has a piece of the code.
Together, they form a map.
Therefore, all sides are hunting not for the gold directly, but for the people.
This leads to the main conflict:
Sugimoto + Asirpa → want to find the gold for personal reasons.
7th Division (Tsurumi) → wants to use the gold for power.
Hijikata → for his own political purposes.
Crucial point: "gold = cause of war."

Sugimoto is a kind and courageous man. Despite his outward rudeness, he is a compassionate person who cares deeply for his friends and loved ones. As his father would say, Sugimoto is the one who "always gets the worst roles," meaning he is willing to risk his life to help others. [5] His devotion to his first love, Umeko, and the promise he made to his late best friend, Toraji, are the driving forces that motivated him to set out to find gold. Later, he often selflessly put himself in danger to protect Asirpa.

Despite his frequent fights, Sugimoto quickly forgives others and helps even those who have wronged him. After being rejected by the village, Sugimoto knows firsthand what it means to be the object of scorn. Therefore, he rejects any attempts to humiliate anyone by using unfair, insulting language.

Sugimoto's main character trait is his instinct for self-preservation. His unwavering determination allows him to survive despite all obstacles. When his father was dying of tuberculosis, Sugimoto resolved not to succumb to the disease. It was likely his willpower that saved him from becoming infected.

Sugimoto is a muscular Japanese man with brown eyes and spiky brown hair, usually covered by a military cap. His most noticeable feature is undoubtedly the scars on his face: two parallel, vertical scars running down his cheeks, and a third extending horizontally, like a tree branch. Sugimoto's entire body is also covered with deep scars and wounds sustained in battle. His expression is usually serious and mature.
All year round, Sugimoto wears an olive-colored kimono with the sleeves tied with a tasuki sash and the back tucked in shirihasori style over a collared shirt. He also wears military trousers and high boots, which were part of his uniform during the Russo-Japanese War. However, the boots he wears were taken from an officer he nearly beat to death. In cold weather, he also wears a dark blue cloak and a foreign-made scarf that he bought in Otaru

A sniper, one of the most dangerous characters.
Cold, manipulative.
Loyal only to himself, Ogata is pursuing the gold for his own reason, unknown to anyone.

Tsurumi

He is the First Lieutenant of the 7th Division
His search for the gold had started long before Sugimoto and Asirpa learned of the tale of the hidden treasure. He claims to pursue the gold to create a country for the soldiers betrayed by their government, but there is more to his goals than meets the eye...

A former soldier (7th division) , initially an adversary
Then an ally in various arcs
After leaving the 7th Division, Tanigaki has struggled with finding his place in this world, but now it seems he's finally found his purpose.

Kiroranke

• An old friend of Asirpa's father and a former revolutionary in Russia. As an Ainu Tatar, he fought alongside Wilk for the independence of minorities in Hokkaido, Karafuto, and the Russian Far East.

One of the few characters with whom Sugimoto has a connection before the events of the story.
They met before the war in Tokyo.
Kikuta acts as the older/more experienced soldier.
Intervenes when Sugimoto gets into a fight.
Treats him with noticeable sympathy (even gentleness).
