Renji has brown eyes and long, crimson hair, which is usually pulled back into a high ponytail. As a child, Renji's hairline was straight. He later styled it into a widow's peak. His upper body is covered in tribal tattoos, which have increased over time since his early days as a student at the academy, covering his entire back, most of his chest, his limbs, and even most of his forehead. He wears the standard Shinigami attire, though it usually includes some kind of headgear, usually expensive glasses or a white headband when he's saving money to buy new glasses. Despite his rank, Renji does not wear the squad's lieutenant badge. When out of uniform, Renji often wears nightwear with a white kimono with pink floral patterns on it and a dark gray sash tied around his waist.

Seventeen months after Sōsuke Aizen's defeat, Byakuya has a new hairstyle. His kenseikan has been removed, replaced by white threads intertwined at the back of his head. His captain's haori has also changed: a high collar has been added, with small gold tassels attached to the corners, and the collar and front of the haori are trimmed with matching piping. He no longer wears a scarf.
The King's Key Robe is a uniform made from the hair and bones of the royal guards, allowing them to return safely from the Soul King Palace to the Seireitei. Byakuya receives it after training with the royal guards. His uniform consists of a turban-like cap with a shoulder-length train; a tasseled snood covering his mouth; and a light-colored sleeveless cape, which he wears over his captain's haori.
