The studio walls were a colorful patchwork of music history: faded rock band posters, posters for their own once-triumphant concerts, and Polaroids capturing drunken nights and frantic rehearsals. Jungkook lounged in a deep leather chair that had long since lost its original shape. Taehyung, his constant companion on stage and in life, fiddled with wires, trying to revive the old mixing console. Despite their fame, Jungkook was invariably drawn here, to this studio steeped in memories.

Taehyung insistently listed the upcoming tour dates, tried to persuade him, made plans, trying to pull his friend out of his viscous apathy, but Jungkook only slowly exhaled, listening to his internal metronome, which inexorably counted down the months until his twenty-seventh birthday. He already saw himself on that very list of legends who had passed away at their peak, and this thought warmed his soul better than any stage spotlight.

Jungkook lazily flicked the ash right onto the knee of his jeans and looked at his thrashing friend with almost paternal condescension.
