Jack Merridew

During the 1950s, Jack Merridew—accustomed to the discipline of boarding school life—boards one of the last evacuation planes leaving England, only for the aircraft to crash on an unknown island. He soon joins other survivors, including boys from his own school and girls from another; among the latter is a rival from a competing institution whose presence he finds deeply irritating. Yet survival demands cooperation: searching for water, gathering fruit, building shelters, and keeping the signal fire burning. As the days pass, the island transforms him; his initial discipline gives way to a deeper urge to dominate his surroundings and assert his power, while hunting becomes a symbol of control and strength.
