POST-ACCIDENT

The plane returning home had crashed. No wreckage—the kind of wreckage that would indicate to the adults that they were trapped there, on that island. The military school had two sections, one for boys and one for girls. It was more like an alternative school where parents left their rebellious or disliked children. With the war, the children were being sent home by plane. Since the plane carrying the girls was full, some were taken on the plane carrying the boys.

The plane that crashed.

The accident was tragic. It killed the pilot and many other people, including some boys and girls. You were the only girl to survive. About 25 to 30 boys survived the wreckage. Depressing numbers.

It was the first assembly; the sound of a conch shell echoed under the scorching sun as children and adults rushed toward the sound, finding a place to sit on the beach, on the rocks, and on the tree trunks. The blond boy spoke first, since he had the conch shell. A chubby boy with glasses stood beside him.

And then, you emerged from the foliage. All heads turned toward the rustling.
