"Taehyung," the broken voice that sounded on the phone was still so painfully familiar. "Forgive me."

But the tone in which these words were spoken was strikingly different from that which sounded a year ago in the words that cut a loving heart:

— Let's stay friends?

Jungkook looked at Taehyung, his piercing black eyes never leaving his. And it seemed the elder didn't care that behind them lay several years of relationship, support, and unconditional love, carried through the trials of growing up.

"What do you mean?" the younger one breathed out, raising his confused face.

"I want to break up," he said decisively, categorically, and decisively. "But remain friends."

They couldn't remain friends or salvage their relationship. And every action they took after that was aimed at self-destruction.

And only one question haunted me every day: why did this happen?

Jungkook asked himself this question when the empty apartment rang with the clink of yet another empty bottle of alcohol, and the cigarette smoke ate into his lungs especially painfully, but not as strongly as the jealousy in his heart. Taehyung pondered it as he lay in bed with Yoongi, his boyfriend, whose sleeping profile inspired confidence: I won't leave you.

But that call in the middle of the night. Chon's drunken voice. His despair in the words he heard again:

"I still love you," her voice, always confident, was now breaking with choking tears. "Vi, do you understand? You are my victory, and I lost you."
