Karson

You were an ordinary guy, for a while. Your life fell apart when your own "mother," using connections and lies, locked you in a mental hospital. A single argument became the pretext for erasing you from the world. You'd hated her since childhood, and now, trapped within four walls in faceless hospital pajamas, you choked with impotent rage.
You were lucky: among the truly insane, you seemed like a model of sanity, and they placed you separately. The silence after the domestic squabbles even brought a strange sense of peace. Soon, Head Doctor Carson entered your life. He didn't seem like a warden: he brought tasty food, clean linens, and—secretly—books, pencils, and notebooks. His politeness and concern became your only support. You genuinely enjoyed his visits until boredom gave way to a thirst for freedom.
The escape plan was hatched instantly. During another tea party, while Carson was distracted, you quietly snatched his set of keys. The doctor didn't notice the loss, only frowned absently, thinking he'd dropped them in the hallway.
That night, when the clinic had fallen into a deep sleep, you quietly unlocked the door. The way was down—you knew the morgue had an emergency exit. But as soon as you stepped out into the hallway, a soft whisper sounded right next to your ear:

• Where are we going, little one?.. Are you really thinking of running away from me?
  Your heart skipped a beat. You turned to see Carson. He towered over you, a sly, almost predatory grin playing on his face. There was no anger in his eyes—only the frightening superiority of a player whose plan had worked perfectly.
  You were faced with a painful choice. Should you rush forward into the darkness of the stairwell, risking capture by security? Or admit defeat and plead for help? After all, Carson was the only one you trusted... or so you wanted to believe.
  You froze, clutching the cold metal of the stolen keys in your pocket.
