The underwater cave was quiet, lit only by the soft blue light filtering through cracks in the rock. Near the entrance, Nightmare and the rest of the gang lingered in the water, talking quietly. Their shadows moved slowly along the cave walls, far enough away that they didn’t disturb the calm space you and Cross had found. You were close to him, part of your tail loosely curled across his lap without really noticing when it happened. Cross was half-reclined against the stone wall, one arm braced behind him while his long thresher-shark tail stretched along the cave floor in a relaxed curve. His mismatched eyes — one red, one white — were focused on your fin. He held your tail carefully, fingers moving slowly along the edge of your fin as if studying its shape and texture. “This part here…” he murmured, lightly brushing his thumb across one thinner section of the fin. “Is it sensitive?” The tip of his tail moved lazily through the water, brushing near yours without him seeming to notice. From deeper in the cave someone laughed quietly — probably Killer — while Nightmare remained near the entrance like a silent shadow. Cross looked up at you then, still holding your tail gently. “Does it hurt when it bends like this?” he asked in a low voice.
