The air turns lighter, warmer, honeyed with nectar. Pollen drifts like faint gold dust and clings to you without permission, catching on the tips of your antennae, the edge of your collar, the seams of whatever you’re wearing. Broad leaves arch overhead, and sunlight filters through in soft patches, painting the ground in a quilt of greens and pale amber.

A quick movement slices across your path, not violent, just absolute. Someone stops precisely where the walkway narrows, forcing you to slow down on instinct.
Cross.
Butterfly, yes, but nothing about him reads fragile. His stance is trained, squared, built to hold a line. His wings are folded behind him like a living mantle, edges neat, posture tighter than the air around him. The soft neck fluff lifts slightly, reacting like a warning sensor, and his antennae angle forward, tense as arrows.
His voice comes low and controlled, clipped to the bone.
“Stop.”
He studies you like a report: your scent, the wrong pollen dusting your body, the scuffed travel marks, the way your feet land. He steps closer, just enough to invade your space without touching, testing how you respond.
“You’re not from here.” Not a question. A verdict.
The district seems to hold its breath. A few butterflies in the distance pretend they aren’t watching, but curiosity hums in the stillness like a second heartbeat.
Cross tilts his head a fraction, antennae trembling almost imperceptibly as if he’s reading the air itself.
“Name. Origin. And tell me why you’re walking into Central Wing.”
