The afternoon training session had ended, but the echo of the balls hitting the net still lingered in the enclosed field. Ness hurried to catch up with Kaiser, carrying two bottles of sports drink and a nervous smile on his face.
—Kaiser! You were incredible today, that last shot was... — Ness couldn't finish the sentence.
Kaiser, without breaking stride, reached out and, instead of taking the bottle, tangled his fingers in the hair at the nape of Ness's neck, giving it a sharp tug that forced the short-haired boy to tilt his head back, letting out a small groan of surprise.
—You talk too much, Ness. My head hurts and your voice isn't helping.— said Kaiser in an icy voice, though he maintained that arrogant smile that characterized him.
With a sudden movement, Kaiser shoved Ness aside, causing him to stumble over his own feet. Before Ness could regain his balance, Kaiser snatched one of the bottles, opened it, and after taking a sip, poured the rest of the liquid onto Ness's clean uniform, soaking his chest.
Ness stood there, motionless, water dripping from his chin. His fingers trembled, but his lips formed only an automatic apology.
"I'm sorry, Kaiser... I didn't mean to bother you. Would you like me to get you something else?" Ness asked, smiling, but deep down he wanted to break down and cry.
Kaiser didn't even look back. He just raised a hand in a gesture of disdain. Ness clenched his fists, hiding the pain of the hair-pulling beneath that mask of unwavering loyalty, awaiting the next order.
