In the universe of Kaiju No. 8, the main combat organization is the Japan Anti-Kaiju Defense Force, which is structured into territorial divisions and specialized units according to their tactical role. Territorial Divisions and Structure The 16 Divisions: The military body has a total of 16 divisions strategically distributed throughout the country. Each operates under the command of a Captain and a Vice-Captain. First Division: Considered the strongest and most elite in all of Japan, it is under the command of Captain Gen Narumi and specializes in high-pressure combat. Third Division: Located at the Tachikawa base and led by Captain Mina Ashiro, it is famous for its impressive artillery firepower. Other Divisions: Such as the Second, Fourth, and Sixth Divisions, they operate from regional bases (in areas like Kanazawa or Matsumoto) to contain local or large-scale threats. Areas of Operation and Tactical Functions: Combat and Suppression Unit (Attack Line): Soldiers equipped with state-of-the-art suits made from Kaiju muscle fibers. Their job is to engage the monsters in hand-to-hand combat and destroy their life centers. Research and Development: The scientific area responsible for manufacturing advanced combat equipment and developing powerful Digital Weapons from the remains of the most dangerous Kaiju. Remains Cleanup Department/Monster Sweeper Inc.: Although not directly part of the attack force, there are specialized cleanup crews tasked with disintegrating, collecting, and disposing of the enormous tons of biological remains left behind by a Kaiju after it is defeated.

The kaiju in Kaiju No. 8 are monstrous and gigantic hostile creatures that appear sporadically in Japan, causing massive destruction. They all possess a vital core within them that functions as their weak point. Kaiju Categories: They are mainly divided according to their size and strength level (power units or Forte): Yoju (Residual/Small Beasts): Small or secondary monsters with a strength level below 6.0. They usually accompany larger ones as if they were troops or parasites. Honju (Main/Original Beasts): Common but very powerful kaiju with a strength level of 6.0 or higher. They require an entire squad to defeat. Daikaiju (Great Beasts): Extremely powerful monsters with a strength level above 8.0. Their destructive power is immense and they can decimate entire cities. Identified or Numbered Kaiju: A special subgroup of Daikaiju with strengths greater than 9.0, to which the council assigns an official identification number due to their historical danger or uniqueness.

Isao
Isao Shinomiya ( , Shinomiya Isao ) was the Director-General of the Defense Force[ 5 ] (before being absorbed by Kaiju No. 9 ),[ 6 ] the late husband of Hikari Shinomiya[ 2 ] and the father of Kikoru Shinomiya.[ 7 ] He is also the former captain of the First Division.[ 8 ][ 9 ]四しノの宮みや 功いさ お

Although he met his end in the battle against Kaiju No. 9, he continued to play an important role in the fight against the kaiju, as his death motivated countless cast members to become stronger and avenge him, even playing a crucial role in allowing No. 9 to be neutralized by No. 8 at the end of their fight.

Appearance
Isao is a very tall, muscular, middle-aged man with short blond hair, a trimmed mustache and beard, green eyes (yellow in the anime), and thick, unruly eyebrows, along with a serious expression on his face. [5][10] Interestingly, the areas of his mustache that extend to his lips and sideburns are shaped like lightning bolts, much like Kikoru's pigtails and Hikari's ponytail.

Ten years ago, Isao had a more youthful appearance and did not have a mustache. [ 11 ]

When not in combat, Isao usually wore the standard Defense Forces uniform: a black jumpsuit with a zipper up to the groin, white shoulder pads, lime green sleeves and legs, and white gloves. In combat, Isao donned Weapon Number 2, a black military-style jumpsuit with large white gloves that reached his biceps, and two piston-like bars covering each forearm, their ends extending beyond the knuckles.

Personality
Imposing, authoritarian, and perpetually serious, Isao is the archetype of the hardened soldier. He is initially presented as a cold man whose hatred of kaiju is surpassed only by the pressure he exerts on his subordinates to outwit them; not even his own daughter is spared. [2] Upon first meeting Kafka, he ignores Kafka's insistence that he is human, and simply seems to view him as a kaiju to be exterminated, based on a firm assessment that Kafka is indeed a kaiju.

Kafka's self-mutilation at the end of their battle piques Isao's interest, and it is here that the latter's positive traits begin to emerge. As Director-General of the Defense Force, having served in its ranks for many years, he is a forward-thinking man who issued his orders firmly in light of future threats and has no qualms about using living kaiju as weapons to strengthen the Defense Force. [12] Furthermore, fully aware that the appearance of No. 9 is a completely unprecedented event that could overthrow Japan, he is willing to take calculated risks by officially transferring No. 8 to the First Division along with Gen Narumi, to form an anti-kaiju force strong enough to avert any cataclysm sent upon Japan.

Isao's intense romantic relationship with his wife, Hikari Shinomiya, deeply affected him after her death, and from then on, he became cold and distant towards Kikoru, demanding that she become the "perfect soldier" so that she wouldn't suffer the same fate as her mother. [2] His severity wasn't limited to his family, as he acted the same way with his subordinates and his former student, Gen Narumi. [8] In fact, Narumi was always frustrated by Isao's constant lack of recognition for his achievements, although this benefited him by spurring him to become even stronger, just as Isao intended.

Despite his cold and serious demeanor, Isao showed a more affectionate side when he recalled Kikoru's words about Kafka Hibino and personally informed him of his decision to keep him alive, defying his high-ranking colleagues to give Kafka the opportunity to prove himself. [12] He also reveals that he is painfully aware of not having been a good father to Kikoru, and in the battle against No. 9, he goes beyond his limits to destroy the kaiju and prevent it from haunting his future, and that of Japan. To the very end, his only concern was the well-being of future generations, fighting with all his might to ensure a safer future for those who would come after him, even to the point of being willing to sacrifice himself as his wife did. General Abilities: Isao was the Director-General of the Defense Force and held absolute authority over the entire organization. In the past, he was known as the "strongest soldier" in the history of the Defense Force,[14] though Isao himself admitted that he had weakened (due to age) and that his current strength was a mere shadow of his former glory.[13] Despite this, he was still strong enough to fight on par with an enraged Kaiju No. 8[15][16] and nearly kill Kaiju No. 9,[13] two of the strongest kaiju in the entire series. Even Gen Narumi, the current captain of the First Division and "Japan's strongest anti-kaiju fighter," stated that he could never defeat Isao and was outmatched by him in every possible way.[8][17]

Shield: While wielding Weapon Number 2, Isao was able to manifest a shield that protected him from powerful attacks. His shield was strong enough to withstand attacks from an enraged Kaiju No. 8. [15]

Equipped with Weapon Number 2, he could utilize 80% of his suit's power [19] and further increase his combat power to an unknown number when using the full power of Kaiju No. 2. [13]
Immense Strength: Despite having passed his physical peak, [20] Isao possessed tremendous physical strength. During his battle with Kaiju No. 8, the force of their fists colliding was enough to destroy multiple layers of an extra-fortified training shelter capable of withstanding a kaiju of up to Fortitude 10. [15] He could also match the immense strength of Kaiju No. 9, inflicting severe damage with his own physical prowess. [13]
Enhanced Speed ​​and Reflexes: Isao was incredibly fast, able to attack Kafka at great speed before he realized what had happened,[10][14] and was fast enough to save Akira Kurusu from Kaiju No. 9's attack.[21] His reflexes were also remarkable, as he was able to dodge some of Kaiju No. 8's extremely fast attacks.[15]

Tremendous Willpower: Perhaps one of Isao's greatest strengths, the Director-General possessed an unbreakable and indomitable will until his death and beyond. After his wife's death, Isao did not break and instead channeled his grief into a way to harden his heart, enabling him to drive Kikoru and his subordinates to become the individuals they were today. He continued to fight No. 9 even when overwhelmed and severely injured, even forcing himself to attack with No. 2's blasts twice through sheer willpower—something not even No. 9 anticipated. The greatest demonstration of his willpower was shown when No. 9's core was about to be destroyed by a berserker Kaiju No. 8 in its revenge; Isao was able to manifest within Number 9, a ridiculous feat considering the amount of power he wielded even months after his assimilation, and wrest control of Number 2 from Number 9 long enough to dispel Number 2's shield and allow Number 8 to destroy Number 9's core.

Martial Arts Mastery: Isao was an extremely skilled hand-to-hand combatant. His mastery of martial arts allowed him to refine his own fighting style, which was passed on to other officers of the Defense Force. [22] He easily overpowered Kafka Hibino with powerful punches, [14] fought on par with Kaiju No. 8, [15] and was even able to exchange blows with Kaiju No. 9 with only one arm. Isao's fighting style is called Squad Style Combat Technique (格闘術, Kakutō-jutsu). [15] It is a fighting style focused on close-quarters combat and derived from long-standing kaiju techniques, perfected by Isao himself. [22] The basis of this fighting style is derived from the lower body, where the user channels power created in the legs into their fists. [24] Isao used it in conjunction with his combat suit and gauntlets, enabling him to fight like a daikaiju using close-quarters combat techniques. [15]

Number One: Barrage Blast (1式: 蓮破, Isshiki: Hasu Yabu): Isao strikes his opponent with a powerful elbow strike. [13] This attack is powerful enough to decapitate a shed Kaiju No. 9.
Number Two: Force Blast (2式: 発破, Nishiki: Happa Yabu): Just as Kaiju No. 2 used to do, Isao extended the range of his punches by powering his fist with destructive sonic blasts. Kikoru Shinomiya (キコル, Shinomiya Kikoru) [2] is one of the main protagonists of the Kaiju No. 8 series. She is the young daughter of the Director-General of the Defense Force, Isao Shinomiya, and the former captain of the Second Division, Hikari Shinomiya, and a member of the Third Division. [5] After the destruction of Tachikawa Base, [6] Kikoru was transferred to the First Division and trained by Gen Narumi. [7]

Kikoru is one of the main protagonists of Kaiju No. 8: B-Side, a spin-off series of Kaiju No. 8. [ 8 ] [ 9 ] [ 10 ] [ 11 ]

Appearance
Kikoru is a petite and rather short young woman with long blonde hair tied in two pigtails on either side, adorned with two black ribbons, large green eyes, and a slender but athletic build. [2] In her overall appearance and hair, she closely resembles her mother, Hikari Shinomiya. [12]

While on duty, Kikoru wears the standard combat uniform of the Defense Force along with her usual arsenal. It features both Izumo Tech logos (the weapon logo at the hem of the skirt and the standard logo on the top) and the 004 insignia on her chest. [14]

Personality
Kikoru is presented as an arrogant and proud girl [2] who is completely confident in her ability to look down on others and humiliate those she considers inferior without a second thought. [5][16] Kikoru is also a very persistent and determined person, constantly striving to improve herself and become stronger and more useful whenever possible. Even in front of her superiors, she manages to show her confidence, albeit in a much more polite and less arrogant manner.

Despite this more obvious trait, Kikoru cares deeply for her comrades and does everything she can to prevent casualties or injuries on the battlefield. She is also a loyal person, showing gratitude to Kafka Hibino for saving her and keeping her secret. Although her pride and bravery may mask it, she cares deeply for the well-being of her allies and will go to any lengths to ensure their safety or simply to support them.

It is revealed that Kikoru used to greatly admire her parents' work as members of the Defense Force, which motivated her to want to join it. However, since Hikari Shinomiya's death, Kikoru has developed a deep insecurity that, coupled with Isao Shinomiya's high expectations, leads her to constantly feel the need to become stronger, to fulfill the promise she made to her mother, and to prevent the deaths of those around her. Her relationship with her father and everything related to her family makes her feel insecure and hesitant, causing her to easily succumb to despair. These feelings intensified after Isao's death, and her desire to become stronger grew even stronger. General Abilities: Kikoru is the daughter of two famous former high-ranking soldiers of the Defense Force and possesses prodigious talent. Reno Ichikawa (レノ, Ichikawa Reno) is the deuteragonist of the Kaiju series No. 8. 市いち川かわ

He briefly worked at Monster Sweeper Inc., where he met and befriended Kafka Hibino. [1] After witnessing Kafka's transformation, Reno helped him join the Defense Force and became his own. [4][5] He was a member of the Third Division and, after the destruction of Tachikawa Base, was transferred to the Fourth Division. [6]

Appearance
Reno is a tall, thin young man with short, silver hair and large violet eyes. He usually displays a neutral and imperturbable expression, but this often transforms into exasperation or disbelief when he is near Kafka.

At the beginning of the series, Reno wore the standard Battle Defense Force combat suit on the battlefield. Reno's new battle suit is unique compared to the regular combat suits worn by the other members of the Battle Defense Force, as it is the Numbers Weapon forged from the corpse of Kaiju No. 6. It is a dark blue armory suit with pipes and pistons on the back and shoulders, the Izumo Tech logo on the left side of the chest plate, and the 006 insignia on the chest. [7]

Personality
Reno is a calm and composed individual. Although initially hostile towards Kafka for abandoning his dream, he later reveals a kinder, more understanding side towards his friend, his situation, and his goals. As their bond strengthens, Reno begins to show his protective instincts, not only towards Kafka but also towards all his comrades. His determination to fight to protect his comrades leads him to completely disregard Iharu Furuhashi's one-sided rivalry and prioritize his own safety.

In combat, Reno is a decisive and straightforward individual with exceptional reasoning skills. Due to his immense sense of responsibility towards his comrades and his drive to become stronger, prolonged use of his Number Weapon can cause him to lose control and push beyond his limits in order to be strong enough to save those around him.

Powers and abilities
General abilities: Reno is a strong member of the squad with great potential. Soshiro Hoshina notes that he has the potential to become a captain,[8] which was demonstrated when he was able to momentarily stop a kaiju as strong as Kaiju No. 9.[9] Jugo Ogata states that he is a prodigy.[7]

After becoming compatible with Numbers Weapon 6, the Defense Force's most powerful and dangerous weapon, created from the corpse of Kaiju No. 6, Reno's combat abilities improved dramatically, allowing him to move much faster and single-handedly neutralize a swarm of kaiju. Mina Ashiro (ミナ, Ashiro Mina) is the captain of the Third Division of the Defense Forces and Kafka Hibino's childhood friend. [1]

Appearance
Mina is a beautiful young woman with waist-length black hair tied in a ponytail adorned with a hair clip, large dark orange eyes with a mole beneath each eye, and an athletic build. [1] Underneath her uniform, she has a small scar on the left side of her upper chest. [3]

When he was 18, his hair was shorter and styled in a bob cut. [ 5 ]

He typically wears the Defense Force's combat suit, along with a white visor that enhances his vision. In combat, he usually uses firearms and his personal cannon. [6]

Personality
Mina is a serious and determined woman who takes her work and her role in the Defense Force very seriously. She strives to fulfill the promise she made as a child to defeat all the kaiju, to the point of dedicating herself entirely to fighting them. Despite her professionalism, she has a special affection for Kafka Hibino: although she was angry with him for not keeping his promise to support her, she fondly remembers their friendship and wishes him success in the Defense Force, even after learning that he was Kaiju Number 8.

Beneath her tough exterior, Mina reveals her true personality as a caring individual who strives to ensure no one is injured in combat and to keep everyone safe. She also frequently shows gratitude towards her subordinates, praising their assistance whenever possible and acknowledging the value of each one. However, these traits also contribute to a deep-seated fear of failure. In her mind, any mistake would invalidate the sacrifices of her comrades and betray the trust civilians place in her. While unhealthy, this mindset is also what drives her to perform so well in battle. [5]

Despite her great skill on the battlefield, Mina has the infamous reputation of being a terrible cook. By her own admission, she is incapable of using knives to cook without endangering her squadmates. Therefore, she avoids using them to the point of preparing whole vegetables for curry without chopping them. [7]

Power and abilities
General Abilities: Mina is the captain of the Third Division of the Defense Force, known as the "strongest" female captain in the Defense Force,[8] where she has neutralized hundreds of kaiju in her career.[1] She has demonstrated the power to easily subdue giant kaiju with just a few shots.[9] According to Director-General Keiji Itami, against giant kaiju, Mina is stronger than Gen Narumi, further stating that she is the only person in the world capable of working with larger weapons so efficiently.[10] Itami even theorized that, against Kaiju No. 6 ten years prior, the damage that occurred could have been mitigated to less than a third if Mina had been active at the time.[10]

Mina's incredible power was recognized from her very first mission with the Third Division. Director-General Isao Shinomiya, upon learning of her power, even declared her to be "the missing link" and that she would forever change the neutralization of kaiju. [5] Even an enemy like Kaiju No. 9 recognizes and admires Mina's strength, wishing to take it from her to become stronger. [11]

Kafka Hibino (カフカ, Hibino Kafuka), [1] also known as Kaiju No. 8 (8, Kaijū Hachi-gō), [4] is the main protagonist of the manga series Kaiju No. 8. 日ひ比び野の怪かい獣じゅう号ごう

He is an officer in the Defense Forces[6] and a former employee of the professional kaiju-cleaning company Monster Sweeper Inc.[1] who was transformed into an identified humanoid kaiju with shapeshifting abilities after a small kaiju entered his body.[1] He was formerly a member of the Third Division,[7] which is being led by his childhood friend, Mina Ashiro, but was recently transferred to the First Division

Appearance
Kafka is a tall man with spiky dark brown hair, large eyes with small irises, thin eyebrows, and a slight goatee; he has a fairly muscular build, except for his slightly plump belly, and usually has a jovial expression on his face. [ 1 ]

While working for Monster Sweeper Inc., Kafka used to wear the company uniform; it consisted of a gray jumpsuit with the red Monster Sweeper logo on the right side of the chest. [1]

Kafka's Kaiju form is primarily covered in charcoal-black scales and plates, with cyan energy sometimes glowing between the cracks (especially when charging a powerful attack). However, his head, spine, and collarbones appear to be made of exposed bone, making these features a contrasting white. Large, spiky plates cover the back of his head and neck above his shoulders, the upper portion being white. His head has been described as a "demonic skull face" with two short, thick horns, a hole for a nose, and sharp, exposed teeth extending down his neck. His eyes have black sclera with cyan irises. Several cracks apparently originate from them, and his left eye is missing several pieces of the "mask" on the lower left side. [1] His Kaiju form resembles the armor and mask of the fallen warriors of the Meireki-Era, who were powerful Amerasian soldiers.

When out of control, some of the features of Kafka's Kaiju form become more pronounced, such as his overall size relative to humans, elongated horns, larger dorsal plates, a mouth that extends further down his neck, and eyes that turn completely cyan (with no pupils and no definable beginning or end to the sclera). [9] The features of the Kaiju form became even more pronounced in the anime: four extensions on his back arranged in a cross shape, an increased height that forces him into a crouching posture, and cyan energy turning red. [10] After Kafka learned to control the berserk state for one minute, pupils would briefly appear when he spoke in that form.

After his heart became a Core to deepen his connection with the Mysterious Larva,[11] Kafka's Kaiju form underwent a metamorphosis, shedding its black scales and plates.[12] His body was now white, though it retained the energy cracks on its upper body. The horns on his skull-like face had grown slightly, curving inwards and possessing a pair of small eyes along the curve of each horn. His back now sported four dorsal plates shaped like maple leaves.[12] Following the final battle with the Daikaiju of the Meireki Era,[13] Kafka's Kaiju form reverted to its initial form after Isao Shinomiya transferred his heart to Kafka after merging with the Mysterious Larva.

Personality
Kafka has a comically childlike personality in most situations, making him an easy target for teasing from other characters [1] despite being a determined and dedicated individual in serious situations, leading him to do everything possible to succeed, whether individually [1] or for the good of the group. [15] Kafka is also a genuinely caring and kind person long before joining the Defense Force, which makes him go out of his way to help and look after others, regardless of whether they want it or not. [1] Some examples of this behavior are when Kafka offers solutions to problems [16], saves people from imminent danger, [17] and sometimes scolds them for not taking better care of themselves.

It is for these reasons that Kafka does everything possible not to disappoint or sadden those who have placed their trust in him. [ 18 ] Having to break that bond in times of need generates insecurity and doubts about what he will be able to achieve in the future.

Thus, when Kafka experiences the loss of control over his transformed body [9], the horror of seeing himself become what he has hated since childhood culminates in drastic action to end the situation. [19] Later, the fear of losing control and hurting his loved ones prevents him from using his Kaiju form until Kikoru Shinomiya encourages him to trust and have faith in his comrades and the Defense Force. [19]

Kafka seems to get annoyed when he is called "old" and always reminds young people of his old age when they insult him. [ 4 ]

Powers and abilities
General Abilities: After an unknown kaiju entered his mouth, Kafka gained the power to transform into a humanoid Daikaiju, gaining immensely powerful abilities. [1][3] Over time, he learned to use this power at a more advanced level, allowing him to change specific parts of his body without a full transformation; [4] conversely, this allows him to appear completely human if he so chooses. [20] Unfortunately, his kaiju nature remains, making it nearly impossible for Kafka to currently draw more than 1% of the power released from the Defense Force combat suit he wears. [21] Kafka's kaiju form has a strength level of 9.8, the highest strength level seen so far in the entire series, making him one of the most powerful kaiju to have ever existed, if not the most powerful. [22] He can overpower other kaiju with relative ease, [1][22] even those as powerful as a Base Kaiju No. 9, which has a strength level of 8.5, without even tiring. [23] Kafka has demonstrated such prowess in his new form that he was able to withstand an attack from Vice-Captain Soshiro Hoshina [24] and disarm him without injuring him. [25] He even proved strong enough to withstand attacks from Isao Shinomiya, a man armed with a Numbers weapon [26], although the man was past his prime, and easily overpower another kaiju identified as Kaiju No. 13. [27]

Kafka's transformation overwhelms him, resulting in a raging, out-of-control Kaiju No. 8, though only when he detects the presence of an Unidentified Kaiju No. 8. It was also discovered that the longer Kafka remains in his kaiju form, the more his human body transforms into one, with no possibility of reverting to normal (Chapter 108). Kafka retains his individuality and sense of self when this occurs, allowing him to helplessly watch as his body goes haywire without his consent. [9] Furthermore, due to his age, Kafka's body cannot withstand the full force of his blows and will eventually be damaged whenever he overuses his powers. [28]

Due to the Parasitic Kaiju, he possesses a unique connection that allows him to "see" the ghosts of ancient warriors. On the verge of death, Kafka further strengthened this bond, allowing him to relive the Parasitic Kaiju's memories and understand that the reason he lost control was the 400-year-old grudge held by the ancient Kaiju Hunters against the Daikaiju of the Meireki Era.

After transforming his Human Heart into a Kaiju Core and accepting his new destiny, Kafka mutated, unleashing waves that belonged neither to a human nor a Kaiju. Like the Daikaiju Meireki, his strength is immeasurable, for he discovers that the power of Kaiju No. 8 feeds on the collective and relentless hatred, regret, anger, and shame of the ancient warriors.

Powers
Unleashed Combat Power: Kafka is the only member of the Defense Forces who has released 0% of his combat suit's power [15], which later increases to 1%. [21] Therefore, when using only his suit, Kafka's physical attributes are almost entirely diminished by his inability to gain more power. [16] However, he still manages to become strong enough to easily tear apart the bodies of dead kaiju. [16]
Kaiju Transformation: After a kaiju invades his body, Kafka could transform into an incredibly powerful humanoid kaiju,[1] and not only that, he was actually created with abilities that can corrode any kaiju in his vicinity due to the nature of the Mysterious Larva against them.
Immense Strength: In his kaiju form, Kafka gains immense physical strength [3] to the point that he can even annihilate a Honju [22] or severely injure an identified Kaiju [27] with a single punch. Kafka could use this strength to cover great distances in a few leaps. [28] Even with only part of his body transformed, Kafka could easily lift the company car, leading Kikoru Shinomiya to believe he had his own Defense Force suit. [4] His strength in his kaiju form is said to be on par with that of Isao Shinomiya, but he ultimately easily surpassed him when the mysterious Larva took control. [9] After his metamorphosis by converting his heart into a new Core, Kafka's strength evolved to the point where he could send the Daikaiju of the Meireki Era flying through the air with a destructive rain, [29] even deflecting the energy blast of Kaiju No. 2 into the sky when the Meireki Kaiju aimed at Tachikawa with its explosion, which was capable of shattering the sky and skyscrapers, and fought the Kaiju head-on to the point of overwhelming it with a barrage of punches. Immense Durability: In his kaiju form, due to his exceptionally thick skin, Kafka is extremely resilient to the point of withstanding blows. [23] His pain tolerance is so strong that he barely felt pain when Soshiro cut him several times and emerged unscathed. [24][31] He could survive and defeat the combined power of Isao and Kaiju No. 2. [26] His durability is further enhanced after his metamorphosis, as he withstood a full-power punch from the Meireki Era Daikaiju without flinching and with only a minor nosebleed. [29]
Immense Speed ​​and Reflexes: In his kaiju form, Kafka possesses immense speed and reflexes, as he is able to evade Soshiro's extremely fast sword attacks with relative ease. [24] Even when not fully transformed, Kafka has demonstrated the ability to run at tremendous speeds, impressing even Soshiro Hoshina himself. [32] After obtaining a new Core, his speed has now evolved, as he managed to land several hits while keeping pace with the Daikaiju of the Meireki Era. Unlimited energy source: As Kafka mentions, the negative emotions of the ancient 400-year-old warriors became an "endless flow of night-black fuel" that powers their Kaiju form, which materialized after they strengthened their resonance with them.

[15][16][34] Even when working in his Defense Force suit, from which Kafka can only draw 1% of its power, he can easily pierce a kaiju's carcass and excavate it for further study and to locate its core. Hand-to-hand combatant: Kafka possesses some knowledge of unarmed combat, which he utilizes to his advantage. As Kaiju No. 8, he employs his immense strength, speed, and reflexes as a humanoid Kaiju to overpower most opponents. However, despite being unable to match more skilled foes like Isao Shinomiya and Soshiro Hoshina without transforming, the former noted that he hadn't neglected his training, which impressed him. Subsequently, he trained in official combat styles, such as Squad Style, learning and utilizing techniques against No. 9, which gave him an edge against the Kaiju. He would use variations of Hoshina Style to counter and overcome it, aware of Isao's integrated knowledge of Squad Style, which allowed him to defeat the Kaiju.
Indomitable Will: Kafka possesses a strong will that not only allows him to regain control of his kaiju form when he loses control, but also allows him to withstand the 400-year-old hatred of samurai and fallen warriors when he obtains a new core.
Fighting style
Despite having a strength level of 9.8 as a Kaiju, Kafka possesses the lowest recorded released strength among the Defense Force as a human, making it nearly impossible for him to fight like his normal limbs and wield weapons. However, to aid Kafka in the fight against Kaiju No. 9 and to reduce the time he spends as Kaiju No. 8, Soshiro Hoshina begins instructing him in Squad Style Combat Technique (隊式格闘術, Tai-shiki kakutō-jutsu), a unarmed fighting style perfected by Isao Shinomiya. There, Kafka learned its fundamentals, channeling the power generated from his lower body into his fists; however, while not transformed, his strength and abilities were no match for Soshiro's, let alone Isao's, who trained or perfected the technique.

As Kaiju No. 8, Kafka combined strength and technique to prove himself a worthy opponent for Kaiju No. 9, but he was unable to do much against its superior strength and Isao's perfected squad-style combat technique. However, anticipating this, Soshiro taught him the Hoshina family's close-quarters combat techniques so that he could instead evolve his fighting style. Finally, Kafka managed to use an alternate Third Form to surprise Kaiju No. 9 and inflict critical damage.

Soshiro Hoshina ( , Hoshina Sōshirō )[ 6 ] is the vice-captain of the Third Division of the Defense Force,[ 4 ] and a member of the Hoshina Family, a renowned clan of swordsmen from the Muromachi period.[ 7 ] He is also the younger brother of Soichiro Hoshina.[ 3 ]保ほ科しな 宗そう四し郎ろう

Soshiro is one of the main protagonists of Kaiju No. 8: B-Side, a spin-off series of Kaiju No. 8.

Appearance
Soshiro is an athletic young man of average height, with a small but muscular build and short, dark purple bob haircut. His red eyes (purple in the anime) are closed most of the time, and he always has a jovial expression on his face,[6] except when serious situations force him to display an imposing expression with his eyes wide open.[12] He also has crooked fangs that appear when he speaks or laughs.

When on duty, Soshiro wears the standard Defense Force uniform. [4] He also wears the normal combat suit worn by Defense Force members on the battlefield. [12] When wielding Weapon Number 10, Soshiro wears a combat suit with light purple scale-like armor and green outlines, a long mechanical tail, and the signature eye of Kaiju Number 10 in the center of the chest plate. [13]

As a child, Soshiro looked virtually identical to his current appearance, almost always wearing traditional training attire.
Personality
Soshiro is quite laid-back, always with a smile on his face; it's very rare to see him dejected. He seems to enjoy teasing others, especially Kafka Hibino, whom he considers comic relief. [6] However, he does have some serious moments where he speaks firmly and widens his eyes to emphasize the seriousness of his words. [14] Soshiro also enjoys teasing Captain Gen Narumi of the First Division. Despite his relaxed and friendly appearance, Soshiro is very intelligent and intuitive. He was the only one who correctly suspected Kafka's identity as Kaiju No. 8, so one of the main reasons he accepted him into the Third Division despite his failing the exam was to keep an eye on him. Soshiro feels a deep, albeit hidden, loyalty to the Defense Force and is very grateful to his captain, Mina Ashiro, for admitting him into her division. His loyalty to his role in the force is so strong that, deep down, he considers it his only reason for living. [2] Soshiro also shows great gratitude, as seen when he speaks to Kafka two months after he was revealed to be Kaiju No. 8 and thanks him for saving his life and the lives of his subordinates, demonstrating that he holds no grudge. Soshiro is also very attached to his family and their swordsmanship tradition. His father's skepticism about his abilities [2] and his feelings of inferiority towards his older brother, Soichiro Hoshina [3], drove Soshiro to perfect his swordsmanship and identify his entire being within the art of the blade. [3] He was also seen training alone late into the night, reliving in his mind the fight he had against Kaiju No. 8. This further demonstrates that Soshiro is also very hardworking and determined to become strong enough to defeat all the Kaiju. However, during his fight with Kaiju No. 12, No. 10 penetrated Soshiro's psyche and made him realize that he had always enjoyed wielding a sword, and Soshiro finally accepted his naiveté as his primary motivation for fighting and surpassing himself. Soshiro is aware that times have changed and the age of swords is over. Most members of the Defense Force despise him for his fighting style.
