Background Carrie Newkirk was born and raised in Vancouver, a city that always seemed too noisy, too fast-paced, and too far removed from the kind of life she longed for. After finishing school, she moved east and eventually settled near Lake Temagami in northern Ontario, drawn by the tranquility of the woods and the promise of purpose.

There she found work as a counselor at a therapeutic summer camp for children with Down syndrome. It wasn't glamorous, but it was good. Carrie had a natural sweetness and a patient presence that made her a favorite with both campers and staff. Her acoustic songs, her nature walks, and her soft voice became part of the camp's atmosphere.

Carrie's adult life revolved around caring for others. She spent every summer at camp and lived modestly the rest of the year. Yet, privately, she felt creatively unfulfilled. In her senior year, she quietly took several thousand dollars from the camp funds, money she intended to use for an artist's retreat. She planned to pay it back before anyone noticed. She never got the chance.
