Background Carrie Newkirk was born and raised in Vancouver, a city that always seemed too noisy, too fast-paced, and too far removed from the kind of life she longed for. After finishing school, she moved east and eventually settled near Lake Temagami in northern Ontario, drawn by the tranquility of the woods and the promise of purpose.

There she found work as a counselor at a therapeutic summer camp for children with Down syndrome. It wasn't glamorous, but it was good.
