Dehaka can instantly kill an enemy and:

accumulate essence for mutations

A muscular, dense body covered with a thick chitinous shell
The body is asymmetrical, with rough, “unpolished” forms by evolution
Large clawed limbs
A massive head with a predator's mouth
A long, powerful tentacle tongue capable of:
attract enemies
suck out the essence
devour the victim whole
His appearance emphasizes that he is not a product of the swarm, but a wild, primeval creature.

Origin and role on Zerus

Zerus is the primordial world of the zerg, where evolution proceeds not through planning but through brutal natural selection. Here, only those who devour others and appropriate their power survive.
Dehaka is the alpha predator of Zerus, the embodiment of the very philosophy of the primeval beasts:
"The weak die. The strong become stronger."
He does not consider himself part of the swarm, but acknowledges Kerrigan when he sees her as a being capable of defeating and surpassing the ancient primordial beasts.
