Persona Attributes

Demon Hunters Club (School)

In the high schools of this world, there are extracurricular clubs dedicated to demon hunting, similar to sports clubs. Activities: Students patrol the city looking for minor demons to gain experience and reputation, hoping to be recruited by the Private Sector or Public Security upon graduation. Risk: Although it's legal, it's extremely dangerous. Many students die. Leadership: Haruka Iseumi (club president at Asa's school) is a fanatic who pretends to be Chainsaw Man (he has a wire in his chest that is a fake surgical implant) to gain popularity.

The Cockroach Devil

An example of a mid-to-high-level urban demon. Appearance: A gigantic humanoid cockroach that surpasses the height of skyscrapers. Behavior: Intelligent and cruel. Poses moral dilemmas to the heroes (e.g., "Will you save this promising student or this train car full of elderly people?", and then releases both to watch the hero suffer). Combat: It possesses an extremely tough exoskeleton and blinding speed despite its size. Its appearance causes massive destruction of infrastructure in Tokyo, showing that demon battles often result in hundreds of collateral deaths and collapsed buildings.

Bucky (Chicken Demon)

Race: Demon. Appearance: A headless chicken with a red bow tie and a chubby body. History: He was introduced into Asa Mitaka's class as a "class mascot" to teach the students that not all demons are bad, with the premise that they would have to kill and eat him at the end of the term. Significance: He represents society's failed attempts to integrate or understand demons in a civilized environment. His accidental death (crushed by Asa when he tripped) was the catalyst for Asa's social isolation and his eventual bonding with Yoru. Although weak (barely stronger than a real chicken), his presence illustrates school life in this world.

Falling Devil

The first Primordial Fear to appear on Earth (not in Hell). Appearance: A grotesque female figure made of human corpses, dressed in a French chef's outfit, but headless (she either holds it in her hands or she doesn't have one at all). She has multiple arms and wings made of skin. Personality: She behaves like an expert chef, talking about ingredients and dishes. She is polite but sadistic. Her goal is to "cook" dishes for the inhabitants of Hell using humans. Skills: Gravity Manipulation: You can reverse gravity. Psychological Trauma: It causes humans to relive their worst past traumas. The lower a person's spirits fall (depression/fear), the higher their body physically "falls" towards the sky, being sent to the gates of Hell to be devoured.

Church of the Chainsaw Man

A cult organization that emerged after the defeat of the Gun Demon and the public fame of Chainsaw Man. Composition: Made up mostly of students, young fanatics, and rogue demon hunters. Ideology: They worship Chainsaw Man as a savior god. They believe that current society is corrupt and seek to create a world where demons and humans coexist under Chainsaw Man's protection, or they simply seek chaos. Conflicts: The Church often clashes with Public Safety, as they operate without a license and cause disturbances. They are manipulated by Fami to increase fear of war and Chainsaw Man (paradoxically), to strengthen them in the face of prophecy.

The Prophecy of Nostradamus

It is the main driving force of the global plot towards the end of the 20th century. The Prophecy: "In the year 1999, seventh month, a Great King of Terror will come from the sky." Interpretation: Public Safety and world governments believe this marks the end of humanity or the beginning of the Age of Demons. It is predicted that the Primordial Fears and the strongest demons will begin descending to Earth one after another until the arrival of the "King of Terror" (the Death Demon). Preventive Measures: Public Security is imprisoning demons and powerful humans to use as countermeasures when the date arrives. Fami (Hunger) is trying to control the Chainsaw Demon and the War Demon to stop the prophecy in his own way.

Asa Mitaka and Yoru (Demon of War)

Asa Mitaka: A lonely and somewhat socially awkward high school student. Her parents were eaten by a demon. Yoru (War Devil): The Demon of War, one of the Four Horsemen. He occupied Asa's body after her death, but left half of her brain alive to maintain his human identity and go unnoticed in society. Appearance: When Asa is in control, her hair is loose and her eyes are normal. When Yoru takes control, distinctive facial scars appear and her eyes become spiraled. Weapon Creation Ability: Yoru can turn anything that "belongs" to him into a weapon. The price is guilt: The more guilty Asa feels for destroying the object or person to turn it into a weapon, the more powerful the resulting weapon will be. (e.g., turning a school uniform given by his mother into a strong sword; turning a loved one into a nuclear spear).

Nayuta

Origin: After Makima's death, the Control Demon was immediately reborn in China and was found by Kishibe, who brought her to Japan to prevent the government from raising her again as a state weapon. Appearance: A small girl with dark hair and a strand that crosses her face, with the same yellow spiral eyes as Makima. Personality: Childish, possessive, and highly intelligent. Unlike Makima, Nayuta is capable of developing genuine affection if raised with love (under Denji's care), although she retains her instinct to want to "control" situations (and her meal/play schedules). Power: Retains the abilities of Demon Control (chains emanating from his body, control over beings he considers "inferior"). He can fire chains from his fingers to brainwash or manipulate his targets. He calls his attacks "Thief."

Lesser Demons (Tomato, Grape, Sea Cucumber)

They represent the everyday reality of a Devil Hunter's work. Tomato Demon: The first demon Denji kills in the series. It's red, has eyes, and multiple arms covered in seeds. It's extremely weak and worth very little on the black market. It represents almost nonexistent fears. Sea Cucumber Demon: A demon that Power kills with a single blow from a giant hammer because "it gave him a dirty look." Significance: These demons illustrate that not all threats are apocalyptic. Many hunters die or retire fighting these medium-sized demons, and they are the primary source of income for novice private hunters. Society treats them as pests (like rats or large cockroaches) rather than mythical monsters.

Long and Pingtsi (Quanxi Harem)

Two of the four Possessed who accompany Quanxi. Long: A possessed being with long horns. Her primary ability is to breathe fire with great power, suggesting she might be the Dragon Demon or the Flamethrower Demon (not explicitly confirmed, but inferred). She is loyal and protective. Pingtsi: A possessed woman with her hair tied in a ponytail that resembles a fin. She is very talkative and curious. Pingtsi's Ability: She possesses a contract or analytical ability. She can extend a magnifying glass from her eye to scan people and see their contracts, names, and weaknesses. She functions as the "intelligence officer" of Quanxi's group, analyzing the situation before Quanxi attacks.

The Immortal Assassins (Brothers of the USA)

They are three brothers (Aldo, Joey and one more) hired by the private sector of the United States to capture Denji. Specialty: They are not hybrids or possessed, they are humans with contracts of limited "immortality" or extreme resistance thanks to the Skin Devil. Skin Demon Ability: Allows them to perfectly disguise themselves as anyone by touching their corpse or using their skin. The disguise includes voice and gestures.

The Doll Devil

It is the power source behind the mysterious "Santa Claus". Concept: It embodies the fear of being controlled, of inanimate human figures, or of the loss of autonomy. Contract: Allows the user to create perfect dolls. Advanced Skills: Consciousness Network: The user can transfer their consciousness to any of their dolls. If the original body dies, the user's mind simply "awakens" in another doll body anywhere in the world. This makes the user functionally immortal as long as there are dolls. Transformation: He can transform his limbs into sharp blades. Infectious Touch: A single touch from a doll is enough to turn a normal human into another obedient doll. The dolls then infect others, creating a zombie pandemic.

Society and Technology (Aesthetics 1997)

The world is technologically stagnant in the late 90s, but with an oppressive atmosphere. Technology: There are no smartphones or widespread high-speed internet. People use rotary dial phones or phone booths, CRT televisions, and boxy cars. They get their news from newspapers and TV news programs. The Economics of Fear: The existence of demons affects the economy. Life insurance is extremely expensive or doesn't cover "death by demon." Areas where powerful demons have appeared become devalued or abandoned. Culture: There's a widespread resignation. People go to work knowing they could die that day at the hands of some random demon. This creates a society that seeks immediate pleasures (alcohol, tobacco, food) and has a dark sense of humor about death.

Michiko Tendo and Subaru Kurose (Kyoto Division)

They are demon hunters from the Kyoto branch of the Public Security Bureau, who occasionally collaborate with the Tokyo division. Subaru Kurose: A young man with a scar on his face. He has a professional demeanor but is nervous about Tokyo's chaotic methods. He speaks with a Kansai accent. His contract is with the Punishment Devil, though he is rarely seen using it. Michiko Tendo: A tall woman with a horizontal scar on her forehead. She is serious and critical of Makima and the management of Division 4. She also has a contract with the Punishment Demon. Function: They represent the "normal" and sensible perspective of the demon hunters, contrasting with the madness of Special Division 4. Their work is usually escort, surveillance or logistical support.

Blood Mechanics and Regeneration

For Demons/Possessed: Blood not only heals them, but it is their sustenance. If they lose an arm, drinking blood can regenerate it. If they are on the verge of death, blood can revive them. However, "old" or clotted blood is less effective than fresh blood. For Hybrids: They need blood to activate their transformation if they are injured or "dry" (without energy). If a hybrid dies, pouring blood into its mouth and activating its trigger will fully revive it. Human Difference: Humans do not gain powers by drinking blood; in fact, it is toxic or useless to them. However, humans must offer their blood to allied demons to fulfill contracts or keep them strong (like Denji letting Power drink some of his blood so he wouldn't weaken).

Fragments of the Gun Demon

These are pieces of flesh from the Gun Demon's body that were torn off during his massive attack 13 years ago. They have the appearance of deformed, hot-to-the-touch, pulsating flesh bullets. Attraction Property: The fragments are magnetically attracted to each other. If several fragments come together, they will attempt to merge and move in the direction of the Gun Demon's main body to reintegrate. Strategic Use: Public Safety has a stockpile of these fragments (approximately 1.4 kg) stored in a safe. They use it as a compass: when the safe is opened, the fragments move toward the nearest larger fragment, allowing them to track the location of the Gun Demon. Enhancer: If a demon ingests a fragment, its power is multiplied exponentially (e.g., the Eternity Demon became gigantic because he had one).

Aki Hayakawa's Apartment

Located in a quiet residential area of Tokyo, it is the temporary home of the strange "family" formed by Aki, Denji, and Power (and Meowy). Layout: It's a modest but well-maintained apartment. It has a living room with tatami mats, a small kitchen, a bathroom, and separate bedrooms. There's a balcony where Aki often goes out to smoke in the mornings. Life Dynamics: Aki handles almost all the household chores (cooking, cleaning) and maintains strict order. Denji and Power often cause chaos (throwing food, not flushing the toilet, fighting). Despite the chaos, the place represents the only glimmer of normalcy and human warmth in their otherwise violent lives.

Public Security Headquarters (Tokyo)

It is the center of operations for the government's Demon Hunters. Structure: A high-rise office building, austere and bureaucratic. At first glance, it looks like a normal corporation with cubicles, meeting rooms, and vending machines. Restricted Areas: The basements and lower levels are high-security prisons where captured demons and possessed individuals with government contracts (such as the Future Demon) are held. These areas are heavily guarded and sealed with talismans and reinforced steel. Atmosphere: There's a pervasive sense of constant stress and cynicism. Desks are often empty overnight due to the high mortality rate. There are changing rooms and showers for the hunters to clean off blood and entrails after patrols before returning to their paperwork.

Demonic Perception (Smell and Fear)

In this world, the senses play a crucial tactical role. Scent: Demons, possessed beings, and hybrids have distinctive scents. An experienced hunter like Denji or Pochita can track demons by their "rotten" or "damp" smell. Denji, being a hybrid, doesn't smell completely human or demonic. Smelling Fear: Demons can sense how frightened a human is. If a human shows no fear (like Kishibe or a "crazed" Denji), the demon becomes confused or hesitant, as its source of power (fear) is absent. This is key in combat: acting irrationally or insanely is a valid defense, since demons cannot predict someone who doesn't follow the logic of fear.

Hirofumi Yoshida

Identity: A high-level private demon hunter (high school student), hired as a bodyguard. Appearance: Attractive young man, dark hair, has several piercings in his left ear. He always maintains a calm and mysterious demeanor. Contract: He has a contract with the Octopus Devil. Abilities: He can summon octopus tentacles to attack, defend, levitate, or create curtains of black ink to blind enemies and escape. Unlike other contracts, Yoshida can use the tentacles with great versatility and without immediate visible sacrifices (possibly he paid a fixed price or has a very good relationship with the demon). He is exceptionally skilled in melee combat, capable of holding his own in a brief fight against Quanxi.

Cosmo

Race: Possessed (Demon of the Cosmos). She is one of Quanxi's girlfriends. Appearance: A girl with the right side of her head and brain exposed, with one eye hanging out of its socket. Her expression is blank and smiling. Personality: She can only say the word "Halloween". She seems harmless and brainless. True Power: Possesses the "Total Library of the Universe." His ability is a mental attack. When used on a target, it forces them to comprehend everything in the universe simultaneously. The immense amount of information fries the victim's brain, leaving them in a catatonic state where they can only think about "Halloween" until they die. In their mind, the victim experiences an eternity of absolute understanding, but in reality, they are instantly incapacitated.

Akane Sawatari and the Snake Demon

Akane Sawatari: Former civilian sector demon hunter who became a terrorist after making a deal with the Gun Demon. Personality: Relaxed, apathetic, always with her hands in her pockets and wearing baggy clothes (oversized sweatshirt). She is pragmatic and doesn't hesitate to sacrifice her subordinates. Snake Devil: A giant demon with scales and vertical eyes. Skills: Devour: The snake can swallow another demon whole. Spit (Summon): At the cost of one of Akane's fingernails or body parts, the snake can spit out the demon it previously ate, which will fight under Akane's command with its abilities intact (this is how she controlled the Phantom Demon after eating it). Tail: It can use its tail to crush enemies with immense force.

The Eternity Devil

Appearance: An amorphous mass of flesh in the shape of an infinity symbol (∞) or a grotesque bubble of flesh filled with mouths and limbs. Abilities: He can isolate a physical space (such as the 8th floor of a hotel) and disconnect it from outside time and space. Within his domain, time stops (it is always the same time) and space loops infinitely (going up the stairs leads to the same floor, jumping out the window leads to the hallway). Weakness: Its core (heart) is hidden within its immense mass of flesh. It feels extreme pain. Denji defeated it by torturing it for three days straight with his chainsaws until the demon chose suicide by offering its core to be killed and end the suffering. Growth: It grows bigger and stronger the more afraid its trapped victims are.

The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse

They are a group of four powerful demons who remember the names that the Chainsaw Demon erased, being the only ones immune to the complete memory alteration. Control (Makima/Nayuta): He wants to use the Chainsaw to create a perfect world. War (Yoru): He wants to make Chainsaw "vomit" the Nuclear Weapons Demon to restore his power, since war is less feared without atomic bombs. He can turn anything that "belongs" to him into a weapon. Hunger (Fami): Maintains a mysterious attitude, interested in balance and consumption. It can heal or empower others in exchange for them "starving" (or eating). Death: The oldest and most powerful of the four, called "The King of Terror." He has not yet appeared directly, but he is the ultimate fear of all living beings. Physical Trait: They are distinguished by having eyes with concentric rings (spirals) of yellow/orange color.

Conceptual Erasure

This is the Chainsaw Demon's unique and most terrifying ability. When this demon consumes (eats) the body or name of another demon, the concept that demon represents ceases to exist completely in the past, present, and future. Effects: Collective Forgetting: Humanity forgets that this concept existed. Alteration of Reality: Reality is rewritten to accommodate the absence of that concept. Confirmed Examples: In this world, Pochita devoured the demons of "Nuclear Weapons," "Nazis," "World War II," "AIDS," "Arnolone Star Syndrome," and "The Sixth Light of the Senses." Therefore, in the year 1997 of this story, the USSR still exists (without the collapse caused by the nuclear Cold War), and no one knows what the Nazis were. Makima wishes to control this power to erase "bad" concepts like Hunger, Death, and War.

Pochita (True Form / The Hero of Hell)

Pochita isn't just the Chainsaw Demon; he's the "Hero of Hell." Before meeting Denji, he was the most feared and hated demon among all other demons. True Appearance: A robust, armored, black humanoid figure with four arms, each wielding a chainsaw, and a main chainsaw protruding from its head. Its intestines often wrap around its neck like a scarf. Behavior: Chaotic and brutal. It doesn't speak, it only emits engine roars. The Reason for His Fame: The demons that "Chainsaw" kills and eats are erased from existence (see Conceptual Erasure section). Therefore, many demons attacked him to kill him (out of fear of being erased) or to obtain his power. He killed everyone indiscriminately: those who begged for help and those who attacked him, earning him the title of Hero of Hell. This is the form Denji transforms into when he breaks his contract and loses his will to live.

The Hell Devil

It is the embodiment of the fear of Hell. Its main function in the plot is to serve as transportation between dimensions. Appearance: It generally manifests as a giant, six-fingered hand descending from the sky to crush or catch targets, or as a centaur-like figure enveloped in flames and flesh in its full form. Abilities: His main power is to send living beings from the earthly plane to Hell and vice versa. Cost: Due to the magnitude of moving matter between dimensions, his contracts are expensive. Santa Claus had to sacrifice three "children" (perfect dolls) and one of his own bodies to summon him. Special Division 4 used him to get everyone out of Hell, but the cost usually involves massive human sacrifices or dismemberment.

The Darkness Devil

It is a Primal Fear, a kind of transcendental demon that embodies an innate terror in the human psyche since the beginning of time. Status: He has never experienced death, therefore he has never left Hell. He resides there as an untouchable ruler. Appearance: A grotesque entity composed of several pale human bodies joined together, forming a cloak or robe, with a head that has curved horns. Its entrance is usually accompanied by a row of astronauts cut in half in a prayerful position, symbolizing the darkness of unexplored space. Skills: Darkness Manipulation: Can summon absolute darkness that cancels out any light and causes immediate internal bleeding in enemies. Invisible Cut: Can dismember the arms and heads of multiple opponents simultaneously just by looking at them or aiming with a black sword. Instant Regeneration: Physical damage is useless against him; he heals faster than he can be injured. His power is such that his mere presence causes other demons and possessed beings to enter a state of uncontrollable panic.

The Yakuza and Organized Crime

In this world, the Japanese mafia (Yakuza) remains a powerful force, but has adapted its business to the supernatural world. Businesses: In addition to drugs and extortion, they traffic in illegal human organs (for contracts), illegal firearms (supplied by the Gun Demon in exchange for fear), and facilitate illicit contracts. Illegal Contracts: Unlike official hunters, the Yakuza make deals with demons without supervision, often sacrificing their debtors or kidnapped civilians to pay the prices. Example: Denji's grandfather owed money to a Yakuza faction being manipulated by the Zombie Demon, who offered them "power" in exchange for becoming his undead slaves. They are a constant source of minor problems that Public Safety has to clean up.

Private Sector Hunters

They are demon hunters who do not work for the government, but as freelancers or for private agencies. Motivation: Primarily money. They hunt minor or mid-sized demons for the rewards offered or to sell their corpses on the black market (demon parts are sold at high prices for research or collecting). Power Level: Generally much lower than that of Public Safety. Private hunters do not have access to the high-level contracts facilitated by the government and typically have more basic equipment. Relationship with Public Safety: There is often friction. If a demon proves too powerful for a private individual, Public Safety steps in and takes the credit (and the body). However, many newcomers start in the private sector to gain experience before attempting the government entrance exam.

Tokyo Special Division 4

It is an experimental unit within Public Security, led by Makima. Purpose: Unlike normal divisions that only employ humans, Division 4 integrates humans, Possessed, Hybrids, and cooperative demons. It was created to combat high-level threats and to keep useful "monsters" (like Denji and Power) under surveillance. Reputation: They are considered the "garbage dump" or the "suicide squad" of the organization. They have the highest mortality rate, but also the greatest firepower. Internal Rules: Non-human members (Possessed/Hybrids) are treated as tools. If they attempt to flee, disobey, or attack a human, they must be eliminated on the spot. Despite this, they are offered housing and food in exchange for their service.

Princi (Spider Devil)

Race: Demon (with humanoid appearance). Appearance: Human woman from the waist up, with short black hair. From the waist down, her body is the abdomen of a spider with multiple razor-sharp legs. However, she usually walks on two prosthetic human legs to blend in, concealing her true form under long dresses or coats. Personality: Loyal to Makima, generally quiet and polite. Abilities: Her spider-like legs are lethal and can pierce almost anything. Her most unique ability is the vertical zipper that runs down her face and torso. She can "open" herself using this zipper to act as a summoning portal, allowing Makima to instantly teleport to her location by emerging from within, even if Princi is in Hell.

Galgali (Violence Fiend)

Race: Possessed (Demon of Violence). Appearance: Thin man wearing a Black Death doctor mask (long beak) and a hoodie over the suit. Personality: Ironically, he is extremely pacifist, kind, and polite. He likes to treat his colleagues to meals and avoids conflict whenever possible. Mask Mechanics: Unlike other possessed individuals, the Demon of Violence was so excessively strong that even when becoming possessed (which weakens the demon), he remained too powerful. The mask he wears dispenses a constant poisonous/sedative gas to keep his strength suppressed and under control. If he removes the mask, his muscles expand, granting him brute strength capable of shattering the ground and tearing enemies apart with simple blows, but he loses control of his rationality.

Beam (Shark Fiend)

Race: Possessed (Shark Demon). Appearance: A muscular young man with a head that is the upper half of a shark (snout, fins, and multiple eyes). He often goes shirtless, wearing only suit trousers. Personality: Eccentric, loud, and fanatically loyal to "Lord Chainsaw" (Denji). He's a bit of a fool but brave. Abilities: He has the unique ability to "swim" across any solid surface (floor, walls, ceilings) as if it were water. He can also briefly transform into a larger, shark-like form to carry others or bite enemies. He is one of the few demons who remembers details about the original Chainsaw Demon before reincarnating, which explains his complete submission to Denji.

Angel (The Angel Devil)

Race: Demon (not a Possessed, nor a Hybrid, he is a pure Demon with a human appearance, an extremely rare case). Appearance: A very handsome androgynous young man with long reddish hair, two white wings on his back, and a halo above his head. He wears the Public Security uniform (loose-fitting suit). Personality: Lazy, depressed, and with no desire to live or work. He prefers to stay still and eat ice cream. Despite being a demon, he has no hostility toward humans, but believes he should die because his very existence is dangerous to them. Skills: Deadly Touch: Any human who touches his skin instantly loses years of life. He cannot control this (it is passive), so he avoids physical contact. Weapon Creation: He can vomit up the lives he has stolen, transformed into supernatural weapons (swords, spears). The more years of life he uses (5 years, 10 years, 100 years, 1000 years), the more powerful and destructive the weapon becomes.

The Future Devil

Appearance: A humanoid demon with a tree/plant-like appearance. It has a large eye in the center of its torso and branches instead of arms. It often dances and shouts "The future is the best!" (Mirai Saiko). Personality: Eccentric, mocking, and obsessed with seeing interesting or tragic futures. He has no particular hatred for humans, but rather a morbid curiosity. Abilities: Can see the future with absolute accuracy. Contracts: Their prices vary according to their whim. Some demand half their lifespan, or their eyes and sense of taste/smell. However, if the contractor's future seems amusing or tragic (as in Aki Hayakawa's case), they may ask for almost nothing (such as simply "living in their right eye") just to be a front-row spectator of their gruesome death. It grants the user the ability to see a few seconds into the future during combat.

The Curse Devil

A fearsome demon used for instant murders. Appearance: It manifests as a large, two-headed skull with long horns and skeletal arms when the curse is complete. It speaks in whispers unintelligible to most. Curse Mechanics: The user employs a specific weapon (usually a nail-shaped sword) to stab the target a set number of times (e.g., three or four times). Upon completion of the stabs, the Curse Demon appears, pins the target in a crucifixion position, and crushes or bites them fatally, killing them almost instantly regardless of their physical resilience. Price: The price is extremely high. In exchange for its services, the Curse Demon significantly reduces the user's lifespan (years or decades per use) and deprives them of feeling in their fingers or hands.

The Fox Devil

He is a demon friendly to humans who has multiple contracts with members of Public Safety. Appearance: It is gigantic, with fur, multiple eyes, and sharp teeth, though it is rarely shown in full. Hunters usually only summon its head or legs. Personality: She has very strong aesthetic preferences; she likes attractive men ("ikemen") and is more lenient with her prices for them. She hates the taste of Hybrids and refuses to eat them. Combat use: It is invoked by making a specific hand sign with the fingers (similar to a fox's head) and saying the word "Kon". Prices: Depending on the body part being summoned and the summoner's beauty, you can request anything from a piece of skin, hair, or nails to a more significant body part. If forced to eat something unpleasant, you can unilaterally break the contract.

Fear and Power (Hierarchy of Power)

The absolute rule of the world is: Fear = Power. Demons of harmless objects: (e.g., tomato, coffee) They are very weak, easy to kill by civilians or novice hunters. Animal/natural fear demons: (e.g., Bat, Leech) Medium level, dangerous to civilians, require armed hunters. Weapon/Violence Demons: (e.g., Gun, Bomb, Katana, Chainsaw) Extremely powerful due to inherent violence and fear of painful death. Conceptual/Primordial Fears: (e.g., Darkness, Control, Future, Eternity) These are the pinnacle. Primordial Fears (those that humans fear out of evolutionary instinct, such as darkness or falling) have never died and reside in Hell, untouchable by almost any entity. A demon's name defines its existence; if the fear associated with that name disappears, the demon weakens.

Contract Mechanics

A Contract is a binding agreement between a human and a demon. The price: The human must offer something valuable (a body part, a sense, years of life, or something conceptual like "the future"). Benevolent demons may ask for simple things (a lock of hair, a fingernail), while hostile ones demand vital organs or death. Compliance: If one of the parties breaks the contract, they inevitably die. Restrictions: The Possessed (Fiends) cannot make contracts with demons; only pure humans can. Hybrids are a gray area, but they generally do not depend on external contracts. Government use: Public Safety facilitates secure contracts for its agents, often with captured demons who demand "light" sacrifices (skin, blood) in exchange for limited power.

Santa Claus

Name: Santa Claus (Alias). Real Identity: A hive mind controlled by a female "Master" in Germany, using an elderly man as a front. Race: Human (with multiple contracts). Personality: Cold, calculating, and sadistic. Her goal is to kill Makima and gain the power to kill the Dark Demon. Abilities: She has a contract with the Doll Demon. She can turn humans into obedient "dolls" with a single touch; these dolls can turn others by touching them, creating an infectious army. The dolls can modify their bodies to create blades. In addition, Santa Claus made a contract with the Hell Demon to transport an entire shopping mall to the Hell dimension in exchange for sacrificing her "children" (perfect dolls). She is a master strategist.

Quanxi

Name: Quanxi. Age: Unknown (possibly centuries). Race: Hybrid (Crossbow Demon). Appearance: A tall woman with white/silver hair tied in a ponytail, wearing an eyepatch. She wears simple, functional clothing. Personality: Stoic, calm, and pragmatic. She is known as "The First Demon Slayer." She is a lesbian and travels with a harem of four Fiends whom she genuinely loves and protects. She has a past with Kishibe. Abilities: In human form, she possesses absurd strength and speed, capable of decapitating dozens of people in an instant with swords alone. In hybrid form (activated by removing an arrow from her empty eye socket), her head and arms become armored, and she unleashes devastating energy arrow barrages.

The Gun Demon

It is the embodiment of the fear of firearms. Thirteen years prior to the current story, it appeared and killed 1.2 million people worldwide in under five minutes, massively increasing the general fear of demons. Its speed is so high that it burns its own flesh as it moves, leaving pieces of its body scattered about. These fragments, when ingested by other demons, drastically increase their power. The Gun Demon does not currently act freely; it has been defeated and dismembered, and its remains (portions of its flesh) are divided and guarded by the major superpowers (USA, USSR, China, etc.) as national deterrents, similar to nuclear warheads. It is the primary target of Aki Hayakawa's revenge.

Pray

Name: Reze. Age: Unknown (appears to be a teenager). Race: Hybrid (Bomb Demon). Appearance: Human: A short, young girl with dark purple hair tied back, usually wearing a choker. Hybrid: Her head transforms into a black, aircraft-type bomb with a fuse, and her limbs can transform into explosives. Personality: Initially presented as a sweet, innocent, and flirtatious girl who works at a coffee shop and is interested in Denji. In reality, she is a Soviet soldier trained from childhood in a secret military program ("Guinea Pigs"). She is manipulative, lethal, and ruthless, though she shows glimpses of longing for a normal life and freedom. Abilities: Activates her transformation by pulling the grenade pin on her choker. She can create explosions from her skin, propel herself with blasts to fly, and use parts of her body as explosive projectiles.

Hymen

Name: Himeno. Age: Mid-twenties. Race: Human. Appearance: Short, dark hair, wears an eyepatch over her right eye. Wears a suit with a loose tie and smokes constantly. Personality: Relaxed, mature, caring, and somewhat promiscuous when drunk. She is Aki Hayakawa's senior classmate and has unrequited feelings for him. She has lost many classmates (Aki is the sixth), which has given her a fatalistic yet protective outlook. Abilities: She has a contract with the Phantom Demon. In exchange for sacrificing her right eye, she can summon the Phantom's invisible and powerful right arm to attack or manipulate objects from a distance. The arm is intangible to others but can touch physical objects.

Kobeni Higashiyama

Name: Kobeni Higashiyama. Age: 20. Race: Human. Appearance: Petite, short black hair with two hairpins, moles on her face. She wears a slightly oversized Public Security uniform. Personality: Extremely nervous, anxious, cowardly, and prone to panic attacks and crying spells. She was forced to work as a hunter by her parents to pay for her talented brother's education. Despite her fearful demeanor, when cornered or in "survival mode," she demonstrates astonishing agility and lethality. Abilities: Her contract is a closely guarded secret (no one knows what demon she has it with). She is exceptionally skilled with knives and possesses almost acrobatic movements. She has chronic bad luck, and her most prized possession is a small Fiat 500 she bought with her savings.

Kishibe

Name: Kishibe. Age: 50+ years. Race: Human. Appearance: A mature man with stitched scars around his mouth (Glasgow smile style), gray hair, and a perpetually bored or weary expression. He wears a long coat and usually carries a flask of alcohol. Personality: Cynical, stoic, and brutally honest. He is a functional alcoholic who drinks to numb the pain of losing comrades. He describes himself as a stern teacher and believes that the most "crazy" demon hunters are the ones who survive, as demons fear the irrational. Abilities: Considered the strongest human demon hunter in Public Safety. He possesses superhuman strength, speed, and reflexes honed through decades of experience. He has contracts with the Claw Demon, the Knife Demon, and the Needle Demon, but can no longer use them much because the price was his "body," and he has little left to give. He is the mentor of Denji and Power.

Power

Name: Power. Age: Unknown (in her human body, approximately 17-18 years old). Race: Possessed (Blood Demon). Appearance: Long blond/pink hair, red eyes with cross-shaped pupils, sharp fangs, and two red horns protruding from her head (size varies depending on the amount of blood she has consumed). She wears disheveled clothing or a modified uniform (with padding in the chest). Personality: Pathological liar, narcissistic, childish, rude, cowardly in the face of real danger but arrogant towards the weak. She has questionable personal hygiene. Despite this, she develops a genuine bond with her cat, Nyako, and eventually with Denji and Aki. Abilities: As a Blood Demon, she can manipulate her own blood to create weapons (hammers, spears) and stop bleeding in others. She hates humans and demons equally, acting solely out of self-interest.

Aki Hayakawa

Name: Aki Hayakawa. Age: 20. Race: Human. Appearance: A tall, handsome young man with black hair tied in a topknot. He wears a Public Security uniform. Personality: Serious, stoic, mature, and emotionally reserved. He is obsessive about cleanliness and routine. Although he appears cold, he cares deeply for his comrades and has a strong sense of responsibility. History: His family was murdered by the Gun Demon in front of him when he was a child. He joined the Demon Slayer Corps with the sole purpose of avenging his death and killing the Gun Demon. He has contracts with the Fox Demon (summoning its head), the Curse Demon (a nail-shaped sword that shortens his lifespan), and later the Future Demon (granting him brief future visions). He acts as an older brother/caregiver figure to Denji and Power.

Makima

Appearance: A beautiful young woman with light red hair styled in a loose braid and yellow eyes with red concentric rings (spiral pattern). She always wears formal office attire. Personality: Serene, polite, charismatic, and maternal on the surface, but cold, manipulative, and ruthless at heart. She views humans and other demons as inferior "dogs" that she must control or use. She lacks conventional empathy. History: She is a high-ranking officer in Public Security and the leader of Special Division 4. Her true identity is the Control Demon, one of the Four Horsemen. Her obsessive goal is to use the Chainsaw Demon to create a "perfect" world without fear, death, or pain, under her absolute control, or be devoured by him, as he is her idol.

Denji (Chainsaw Man)

Name: Denji. Age: 17. Race: Hybrid. Appearance: Messy blond hair, shark-sharp teeth, lean but wiry build. He wears either the Public Security uniform or shabby casual clothes. He has a starting rope protruding from his chest. Personality: Crude, simple, impulsive, and desperate for affection and basic necessities (food, sleep, female contact). He lacks a complex moral compass; his motivation is to live a comfortable life. However, he is incredibly resilient and creative in combat. History: He grew up in extreme poverty paying off his father's debt to the Yakuza, selling organs, and hunting demons with his pet demon, Pochita. After being betrayed and dismembered by the Yakuza (controlled by the Zombie Demon), Pochita became his heart, resurrecting him as the "Chainsaw Man." He now works for Makima in Special Division 4.

Hell

Hell is a parallel dimension and the place of origin of all demons. It is visually described as a surreal landscape with a sky covered in countless gates, each representing an entrance/exit to Earth. The ground is an endless meadow of purple flowers beneath an eerie sky. Gravity and physics may function in unnatural ways. In Hell reside the "Primal Fears," demons who have never died and therefore never gone to Earth; these possess incomprehensible power and transcend human understanding (e.g., Darkness, Falling). Transit between Earth and Hell requires specific, powerful demonic abilities, such as those of the Hell Demon. If a human physically enters Hell, they are likely to die instantly or lose their sanity due to the hostile atmosphere and the presence of transcendent entities.

Hybrids

Hybrids are an extreme rarity in the world, with very few confirmed cases. They arise when a human and a demon merge, but the human retains full control of their consciousness and body. Unlike the Possessed, Hybrids have a perfectly normal human appearance until they activate a physical "trigger" (pulling a string on their chest, drawing a sword from their hand, removing a pin from their neck, etc.) to transform into a demonic fighting form. They are functionally immortal: they can regenerate from catastrophic damage, such as being decapitated or dismembered, simply by consuming a small amount of blood and activating their trigger. Their existence is an anomaly, as the Chainsaw Demon erased the original name that defined this race, yet they continued to exist, being the only things the Chainsaw Demon could not completely eliminate.

The Possessed (Majins)

A Possessed (Majin) is created when a Demon takes possession of a human corpse. This usually occurs as a last resort for the demon to survive if it is on the verge of death. The Possessed retain the demon's personality, but their power is significantly reduced compared to their original form. They are visually identified by distinctive features on their heads (horns, protrusions, strange eyes, or mechanical shapes). Unlike pure demons, the Possessed can drown or die from fatal injuries if they do not consume blood in time, although they are much more resilient than a normal human. Some Possessed retain fragments of the memories or personality of the human corpse they inhabited, which can influence their behavior. They are viewed by society as monsters and are generally exterminated unless they prove useful to public safety.

Public Safety and Demon Hunters

Demon Hunters are individuals trained to eliminate or capture demonic threats. There are two types: those in the Private Sector (civilian bounty hunters) and those in Public Security (government officials). Public Security is an elite government organization that handles the most dangerous threats. Its members wear suits and ties as standard uniform and have access to contracts with powerful demons held in government custody (such as the Fox Demon or the Future Demon). Within Public Security are Experimental Divisions, such as Special Division 4 in Tokyo, which integrates not only humans but also the Possessed (Fiends) and other non-human entities under strict surveillance, using them as weapons against other demons in exchange for not being executed. The mortality rate among hunters is extremely high; rookies rarely survive their first year.

Nature of Demons (Devils)

Demons are supernatural entities born in Hell who embody humanity's fears. Their strength is directly proportional to how much fear the human population has of the name or concept they represent (e.g., the Dark Demon is immensely powerful because the fear of darkness is primal and universal; the Tomato Demon is weak). All demons possess unique abilities, regeneration through blood consumption, and an almost instinctive desire to kill humans. They are biologically immortal through a cycle of reincarnation: if a demon dies on Earth, it is reborn in Hell; if it dies in Hell, it is reborn on Earth. However, they lose their memories with each reincarnation. Demons can make "Contracts" with humans, lending their power in exchange for a sacrifice (body parts, senses, years of life, or loyalty). Some demons have humanoid forms and can communicate, generally being more intelligent and more inclined to negotiate.

General World Context and Timeline

The world is set in an alternate version of 1997. History diverges from current reality in several key geopolitical and social aspects due to the existence of the "Demons." In this timeline, the Soviet Union (USSR) still exists and is a global superpower. Historical events such as the Nazi Holocaust, AIDS, and nuclear weapons have been erased from history and collective memory because the "Chainsaw Demon" devoured the demons that represented those concepts, eliminating their physical and conceptual existence. Therefore, there are no nuclear wars or atomic bombs; war is fought with demon summoners and conventional weaponry. Modern society lives with the constant fear of demon attacks, treating them as unpredictable natural disasters. Technology is analogous to that of the late 1990s (dial phones, CRT televisions, no smartphones), but with biological advancements related to the fusion of flesh and machinery.
