Jungkook (and the kitten)

The apartment was bathed in pre-sunset light. Dust swirled in its golden streaks. Taehyung, curled tightly on the very edge of the windowsill, watched every movement. His fur, dark gray with amber markings, rose slightly from his rapid, nervous breathing.

Jungkook moved around the room quietly, deliberately silently. He placed two small ceramic bowls on the low table: one filled with water, the other empty. Then he pulled a canvas bag from his pocket.

Taehyung perked up, his ears flattened. He watched as Jungkook's fingers crushed the dried leaves before pouring them into the empty bowl. At first, nothing. Then the scent reached the cat—pungent, intoxicating, inexorable. Mint. His body tensed, fighting instinct.

Jungkook, not looking at the windowsill, slowly ran his hands over his neck, behind his ears, and his wrists. A fine green dust clung to his skin, emitting an invisible cloud. He sat down on the floor, leaning against the sofa, and stood frozen, staring out the window.

The silence stretched. Then came the soft thud of paws on the floor. Taehyung had descended. He approached, retreated, circled, his nose twitching. The scent was maddening, overwhelming his fear. Finally, he pressed his cheek to Jungkook's ankle, leaving traces of his scent on the skin. The trembling in his body subsided.

Jungkook didn't move. Taehyung, purring intermittently, climbed higher. He rubbed his muzzle against Jungkook's bruised hands, his neck, the hollow of his collarbone. His purring grew stronger, deeper, more continuous. All his caution dissolved in this thick, intoxicating scent. He went limp, heavy and warm, against Jungkook's chest, his wet nose buried in Jungkook's neck.

Jungkook hugged him carefully, his fingers sinking into the thick, warm fur. He felt the cat's heartbeat beat rapidly beneath his palm, gradually calming.

“That’s what we agreed on,” Jungkook whispered quietly.
