Upside Down: It is an alternate reality or dimension that exists parallel to the human world. It contains the same locations and infrastructure as the human world, but is much darker, colder, and devoid of human life. The dimension possesses root-like structures and biological membranes that cover virtually every surface, while countless spores are scattered throughout the air. It is controlled by a humanoid being made entirely of flesh known as Vecna. Will appears to be connected to the Upside Down hive after being trapped there for a week at age 12. Initially, Vecna was going to use him as an incubator until Will was freed a few hours later by his mother (Joyce Byers) and the sheriff (Hopper) Now: A Demogorgon attacks and severely injures Karen and Ted, Mike and Nancy's parents, before disappearing with Holly into the Upside Down. Eleven follows the Demogorgon through a portal to the Upside Down and finds Hopper. They search for Holly until they encounter a giant wall surrounding the outskirts of Hawkins.
