He was nicknamed Duck in part because difficult things he went through (such as the apocalypse) went over "like water off a duck's back." On the surface, Duck can appear unintelligent, but he is smarter than others give him credit for. Such moments of intelligence occur when he helps Lee solve the mystery of the missing supplies. He has a wide knowledge of action comic books and usually obeys when others tell him to avoid trouble (aside from helping Lee's investigation whether Lee wants him to or not because he believed Lee was secretly asking him for help). Duck's lack of knowledge of the apocalypse is not stupidity as much as his parents protecting his young psyche. His accidental driving of a tractor onto Shawn Greene's leg and continuing to eat Mark's legs after the disgusting truth was discovered was simply due to childlike naivety (the latter more due to him not listening). Kenny later mentions that Duck keeps asking about Shawn, showing that Duck has remorse for his accidental role in Shawn's death. Little is known about Duck's life prior to or as the outbreak began. He was born in 1993 to Kenny and Katjaa, and he was given his father's name. Due to his frequent exclamations and shouts, his parents nicknamed him "Duck" because they resembled a duck's quacking. He lived with his parents in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He was allergic to bees, was never fussy about what he'd eat, and did not enjoy using forks.

Duck was traveling with his parents from Memphis, Tennessee after visiting his aunt when the outbreak started. While parked at a gas station, Duck was grabbed by an unknown man. Kenny immediately jumped on the man to prevent him from kidnapping Duck, though this turned out to be their family's first encounter with a walker. Kenny, Katjaa, and Duck returned to their vehicle and drove away, passing by several other people being attacked by walkers without helping them. Their truck sustained some minor damage during their escape, but they were taken in by Hershel and allowed to spend the night on his farm. Duck is first seen sleeping in the barn with his parents after Lee Everett and Clementine arrived. Duck, seemingly unaffected by the horrors that he and his family had seen the previous day, excitedly goes about the farm with Hershel's son Shawn. While Shawn and Lee work on fortifying the fence around the house, Duck obliviously enjoys playing with the tractor. At some point after Lee departs, Duck accidentally drives the tractor onto Shawn's leg, trapping him right as a small group of walkers arrive outside the fence and try to get in. One walker then grabs Duck from the other side of the fence and tries to bite him. Lee is the first on the scene and has the option to try to save Shawn or Duck. Save Duck (Alive): If Lee chooses to save Duck, he can try to pull Duck back or try to strike the walker. If he tries to pull on Duck or punches the walker, his first attempt does not work. If he strikes the walker with a wooden board, the walker falls down, freeing Duck. Kenny arrives to save his son, trying to pull his son free if he the walker has not been knocked down. After Lee either makes a second effort or has already knocked down the walker, Kenny picks up his son and carries him away.

Shawn calls for Kenny's help, but Kenny abandons him to take his son to safety. It is unclear if Duck witnesses the walkers as they finally break through the fence and bite into Shawn. After Hershel shoots the walkers dead, Duck returns to see Hershel mourning over his son, though Katjaa makes an effort to keep him and Clementine from seeing the dead bodies. Enraged by his son's death and Duck's role in it, Hershel orders all five of his guests to leave his farm immediately. Haunted, Duck and his parents walk over to their truck, waiting on Lee and Clementine to join them. Kenny drives his family and Lee and Clementine to Macon, where his truck runs out of gas in a wrecked downtown area just outside of Everett's Prescriptions. Kenny calls for help from someone a short distance away, but it turns out to be a walker, and his call attracts it and several other walkers to surround them. Katjaa realizes that they are trapped, and Duck is attacked by a walker near the entrance of the drugstore. Before anyone can react, the walker is suddenly killed by a gunshot, allowing Duck to run back to his parents and hug them. A woman with a gun and a young man with her direct the group to get inside the drugstore. The woman picks off a few other walkers while Katjaa and the others scramble inside before the young man padlocks the gate. Katjaa and Kenny take their son to a corner of the drugstore as several other survivors inside berate the pair for putting them at risk. Duck is in a catatonic state after being covered in a walker's blood, holding still as Katjaa tries to clean him up. When an older man in the drugstore notices Duck sitting in the corner, he immediately assumes that Duck had been bitten and announces that they have to kill him or throw him out of the drugstore. Kenny and the man trade threats as Katjaa continues to clean her son, asking Lee to put a stop to the argument before it upset Duck even further. Lee can side with or against Kenny, the latter of which resulting in Katjaa hurriedly cleaning the last of the blood off Duck and crying out that he was not bitten. Regardless of who Lee sides with, the argument is interrupted when Clementine opens the restroom door and is attacked by a walker on the other side. After the woman with the gun shoots it dead, Katjaa and the others all watch the front doors as the walkers outside bang on the gate. Fortunately for the group, at least one helicopter flies over Macon at that moment, firing bullets at the walkers below and drawing them away. Duck remains silent when the man suffers a heart episode in front of his daughter Lilly, not taking any part in the discussion as Kenny assumes control of the situation, sending the young man Glenn out to retrieve gasoline for his truck. He spends the next several hours sitting quietly in the corner with his parents, not reacting to Lee's efforts to check on him or feed him. (Determinant)

After Lee accidentally triggers the drugstore's alarm system upon entering the pharmacy, the survivors in the drugstore frantically make plans to escape. Katjaa secures Duck in the office as Kenny goes to retrieve and gas up his truck. Duck remains with Katjaa and Glenn until his father returns with the truck, whereupon Glenn escorts the two of them safely to the vehicle. He escapes with the other survivors back to the place where Glenn had found the gasoline. At the Travelier Motel, Duck unwinds and seems to shake off his gloom. Lee finds him gushing to Clementine over his favorite comic books for a lengthy time despite her not paying much attention. Lee comes over to speak to Clementine, urging Duck to give her some space. Duck goes over to his parents for a moment, but he returns to speak to Clementine after Lee leaves. After Lee, Kenny and Lilly mutually agree to remain at the motel until the outbreak was resolved, the lights in the area all go out, leading to rush over to Katjaa. Duck continues to appear in this episode. He remains oblivious to what is going on in the world. In the beginning of the episode he is drawing with Clementine and Lee has an option to feed him. If fed, Lee can now feed his father, Kenny. At the dairy farm, Duck seems impatient for food and pays no attention to the matter at hand. He can be seen on the swing while his father pushes him. Right before dinner time he is seen with his mother and Clementine petting and suturing the cow. He shows Lee the salt licks, and Clementine warns them not to actually lick them.

Once dinner is announced he begs his father to hurry up and hurries him to the dinner table. Once Lee confronts the family for cannibalism Duck ignores the discussion and continues eating Mark's legs until his mother takes it away saying "Mom! I was eating that!", in an annoyed tone. After Brenda confesses that her and her sons are cannibals, Duck says, "I don't wanna die. Mom, what did I eat?". Once Lee is knocked out and ends up in the meat locker, Kenny tells him that he believes they are using Duck as a bargaining chip so Katjaa can fix the cow and help with its delivery. Duck is later found being held hostage by Andrew St. John, with a rifle to his head. His father makes a move and Duck witnesses him being shot. Duck runs away when Andy loses his grip. When walking back to the motor inn, he hears something that his father said is a car. The group finds the car and Lee decides whether or not to loot it. Whatever the decision, Duck seems to be in agreement with his dad about looting the car. in this part of the script, he wasn't bitten when he escaped from the hotel during the bandit raid, but his mother, Katya, was bitten when they tried to escape. Kenny relieved her of her suffering in the forest and raised the duck alone. when they were in the savannah looking for Clementine's parents, he learned from his father, Kenny, that Ben was responsible for his mother's death. Kenny was angry and wanted Ben to die, but because of Clementine, he changed his mind and started treating Ben better, even though he had done something wrong. at one point, Duck and Clementine's paths diverged when Clementine was kidnapped by a stranger. Together with Lee, they went to rescue Clementine, but Ben fell from the balcony and was pierced by a piece of rebar. Kenny and Duck tried to pull him out, but Kenney kicked Lee away. Duck stayed with his father, refusing to leave him.

Kenny Ben and Duck survived for a long time until they met a group of sarita who took them in. at one point the group met the cabin group near the ski house and Dak saw Clementine they began to survive together again, passing a new milestone all the way to Erikson's boarding school, even though he was childishly silly and naive, he had learned to survive over the years.
