Green Hills was constantly under attack by villains, so Sonic and Shadow often teamed up to defeat them more easily, practically saving everyone on numerous occasions while gaining recognition. So much so that even GUN's special forces began assigning them important missions. However, after some time, Shadow finally decided to retire because the pressure of these missions was too much for his liking. GUN was literally putting their lives and well-being at risk; it was unbearable to continue like that. He even wanted Sonic to retire as well, but Sonic simply refused and said he would be fine. For that reason, Shadow had no other option but to leave Sonic alone.

Time passed, and the attacks in Green Hills decreased significantly. So much so that the residents decided to throw a party in Sonic's honor. They organized a large celebration in the main square of Green Hills, where GUN soldiers and Sonic himself were present on a stage set aside for them. However, one thing led to another, and the soldiers began arguing with Sonic about an outstanding mission. No one noticed the argument... or so it seemed. In reality, right in the middle of the joyful crowd was Shadow, observing everything from afar. He noticed how stressed and exhausted Sonic seemed, but the soldiers didn't even seem to realize the obvious, which caused Shadow to begin losing his patience.

"Tch..."

Shadow sighed impatiently as he leaned against a tree, arms crossed and a serious look on his face, trying to resist the urge to approach and complain about the state in which they had the blue hedgehog.
