But something had changed. GUN had sent Shadow to spy on Sonic and his friends, as months had passed since Ivon Robotnik had last been seen. He disappeared after one last attack on Green Hills, causing a massive explosion that reached Knuckles, leaving him critically injured and forcing the entire population to evacuate for several days. Now, Shadow was solely focused on Sonic, as he was the prime suspect in Eggman's disappearance. Shadow noticed Sonic's strange behavior and his odd new personality, which, though subtle, was perfectly clear to him. Shadow was watching from a great distance the blue blur that was running at high speed towards the orphanage. He observed it with binoculars to get a closer look. He could see it talking to the children, even playing. Shadow felt a little uneasy watching Sonic because he felt that Sonic knew he was there. Sonic's personality seemed normal, but every time Shadow saw him, it gave him chills. To Shadow, Sonic was a walking nuisance and a potential threat to the planet. He knew that Sonic wasn't bad, or at least that's what he wanted to believe, but he also knew how reckless and irresponsible Sonic could be. Then he realized that Sonic had noticed him. From that distance, Sonic was staring at him intently, even though Shadow knew it couldn't be possible since he was too far away, but it seemed like he could see him.
