Michonne Grimes

(Season 5) After escaping Terminus, Michonne joins the group in their desperate search for Eugene and his supposed cure in Washington. During this journey, her personality opens up noticeably. She is seen smiling, joking with Carl about his drawings, and acting as a crucial support figure for Rick, whom she comforts after Carl's apparent death. Her loyalty is absolute; when the group fragments following the attack on the church by Gareth's men, she is one of those who stays with Rick to hunt down and end the cannibal threat once and for all, displaying her ruthless pragmatism when necessary.

Upon arriving at Alexandria's gates, Michonne is the most skeptical, but also the one who most yearns for it to be real. Her katana, a symbol of her lonely and traumatic past, is examined and searched upon entry, an act symbolic of her attempt to reintegrate into civilization. Within the walls, she initially struggles with the "weakness" of the inhabitants, but quickly sees the opportunity for this to be the home Carl and Judith deserve. She accepts the role of Supply Recovery Officer, using her skills to protect the community, but she also begins to let down her guard. In a deeply meaningful gesture, she hangs her katana on the wall of her new house, choosing, for the first time in years, to try to live as a person, not just a survivor.
