female role
The lives of women in the Middle Ages were determined by the Church and the aristocracy. The medieval Church provided the "big picture" of the meaning of life and one's place in it, and the aristocracy ensured that everyone stayed in their place through the feudal system of government that divided society into three classes: the clergy, the nobility, and the serfs. Women's place in the clergy was restricted to the convent. The position of noblewomen was dictated by the amount of land they brought into marriage, as land equaled power, so the quality of life and opportunities for autonomy varied considerably among the upper class. Lower-class women actually had more freedom of expression than others because life was difficult for serfs (male and female) alike; women worked alongside men in the fields and in medieval guilds.
medieval customs
The lower classes held festivals, games, and dances that liberated the body and gave free rein to the grotesque. These activities were distinct from both the religious festivals held by the Church and the secular celebrations of the aristocracy.
In particular, some historians interpreted carnival as a form of resistance against ecclesiastical oppression and the domination and refinement of the privileged classes. Other popular celebrations had a religious significance linked to village life, such as births and weddings.
importance of the clergy
Medieval society was tripartite, that is, it was divided into three large groups called estates, and each of them had a function within that society:
The bellatores were the knights (nobility) and they were dedicated to fighting to protect society. The oratores were the clergy, who dedicated themselves to praying to save souls. The laboratores were the peasants, artisans, and merchants, also called the commoners. They worked to sustain society as a whole. Each social class had its place within the social hierarchy. The clergy, along with the nobility, were among the privileged; that is, they did not work and did not pay taxes, but rather received them.
The Inquisition judged the crimes of heresy, witchcraft, and sorcery. What was the Inquisition? The Holy Inquisition (or simply the Inquisition) was a set of institutions belonging to the Christian Church between the 12th and 19th centuries. The Inquisition's objective was to maintain socio-religious order in Catholic territories. The Inquisition acted in response to accusations of heresy, witchcraft, sorcery, and other practices deemed dangerous to the well-being of Christian societies. It functioned as a court of justice and sent representatives (called "inquisitors") to conduct investigations and trials.
The trials of the Inquisition became famous for the cruelty of some inquisitors, who used torture as a method to obtain confessions during interrogations.
more important data
Medieval life was far from static and uniform. It was the scene of numerous human displacements, epidemics (such as the Black Death), wars, and new political forms, including the formation and expansion of empires beyond the borders of Western Europe, such as the Muslim empires and the Byzantine Empire. This gave rise to conflicts and conquests, such as the Muslim invasion of the Iberian Peninsula, the Crusades, and the Spanish Reconquista. In feudal societies, political power was decentralized and exercised independently by the feudal lords, who collectively constituted the warrior and religious nobility. This social group monopolized land ownership in a context where agricultural production was the main source of wealth and the basis of the entire economic system.
important data
The Middle Ages or the Middle Ages[1] is the historical period of Western civilization between the 5th and 6th centuries AD, successor to the Ancient Age and predecessor to the Modern Age. Conventionally, its beginning is placed in the year 476 with the fall of the Western Roman Empire and its end in 1492 with the discovery of America,[2] or in 1453 with the fall of Constantinople, a date that has the singularity of coinciding with the invention of the printing press - publication of the Gutenberg Bible - and with the end of the Hundred Years' War between France and England. With that said, considering the fall of the Western Roman Empire until the discovery of America, the Middle Ages covered a period of 1016 years. The Middle Ages are usually divided into two major periods: the Early or High Middle Ages (5th century, without a clear differentiation from Late Antiquity); and the Late Middle Ages (11th-15th centuries). The latter can in turn be divided into a period of plenitude, the High Middle Ages (11th-13th centuries), and the last two centuries that witnessed the crisis of the 14th century (with feudalism in its most obscurantist features, as defined by the revolutionaries who fought the Ancien Régime). It would be a period dominated by isolation, ignorance, theocracy, superstition and millenarian fear fueled by endemic insecurity, violence and the brutality of constant wars and invasions and apocalyptic epidemics.
