Positive is his main weakness that only Dream can exploit. This is the only way to defeat Nightmare.

Light is one of his weaknesses. If you illuminate a dark area, he can get injured.

He also completely fails to fit into positive AUs like Haventale or A Tale o Doggy. A similar thing happens to Dream in Horrortale.

Since he only has one eye to see, he has a blind spot.

As a child, Nightmare cared for his brother, his homeland, and the tree that gave them life. Together with his brother Dream, he guarded the Tree as a Guardian. Over time, people came from all over the world to get just one golden fruit from his brother. But no one took the apples from Nightmare's side. Who wants to feel bad? And soon many began to avoid him. "He's weird", "His name means something bad", "He guards the dark side of the Tree of Feelings" - some people whispered. Nightmare began to be hated more and more, throwing everything they could at him. When he got some bruises, he told his brother that he tripped. Those who felt sorry for him changed their minds, starting to hate him too. After some time, he tried to prove to everyone that he was not bad, that he could take care of his brother's golden fruits, trying to touch the fruits from the Light side. But at his touch, the apples turned from golden to dark, similar to those that grew on his side due to Nightmare feeling fear and oppression. All the golden fruits turned black, the leaves of the Tree fell, and the sky turned scarlet. Dream saw all this. Meanwhile, people and monsters were advancing, feeling hatred. Now, because of him, they will no longer be able to receive happiness. Dream tried to stop them, but he was literally trampled. Suddenly, someone's voice ordered Nightmare to eat all the fruits. This voice did not sound like the voice of the spirit of the Tree of Feelings, but rather the opposite, as if someone else was standing behind him, giving these advices. As he devoured the dark fruits, his eye sockets filled with darkness, cracks appeared on his body. Soon, he vomited black mucus, and tentacles pierced his ribs. After some time, a black monster stood in the place of the guardian.

For a while there was a deathly silence, but soon it was broken by the sound of tentacles whistling through the air, cutting like blades into everyone in their path. This is an incomplete story of how he became what we know him as today[5].

When Nightmare was younger, he had white bones. His pupils were lavender and he had no tentacles. He wore a jacket similar to his brother's, only his had long sleeves. It was covered by a golden belt with "NM" (Nightmare) on it. He wore black pants and dark purple boots. The top of his head was adorned with a golden tiara, with a crescent moon design.

Initially, before the bullying, Nightmare was quite a cocky and very confident brother. He always wanted to learn new things, even if it was something dangerous or not very good for various purposes. This habit has been passed on to the current Nightmare, as he reads books from time to time.[3]

Nightmare is quite attracted to negative emotions and will do everything to get as many of them as possible, meaning that killing victims makes no sense to him, since without them there will be no negative emotions he needs. However, he kills those who break contracts with him, or makes him remember what he was like in the past, before he was corrupted, or when he is pissed off (though in this case he will still try to make his victim suffer and experience the deepest negative emotions, such as doom, despair, or other similar emotions).

Nightmare never lies, he only hides the truth. He takes deals to heart, which is why he kills those who break them without question.

Despite Nightmare's inability to show sympathy to anyone, he can, in a way, "sympathize" with those who share a similar fate to himself - the rejected and bullied outcasts of society. Seeing such scenes, Nightmare falls into a wild rage and kills without a second thought anyone who bullied his kind in the past. This is his only manifestation of weakness and fear, although he tries to deny it, despite the fact that fear is also considered a negative emotion.

Unlike Dream, Nightmare is very well-read and intelligent, as he has had the opportunity to study information and travel across the multiverse for 500 years, spreading his negativity. Because of this, Nightmare acts like a fully grown character (one could say that he is an older brother to Dream).
