Nightmare and Dream lost their immortality when they ate the apples. Unlike Dream, Nightmare is effectively invulnerable to attacks due to his unstable body.
Joku created Nightmare before she created Dream, for another AU completely different from Dreamtale called Underflesh. The concept wasn't very popular and she scrapped the AU, but kept the character. Nightmare (like Dream) actually has no gender or sex, but for convenience they are both labeled as male.
Canonically, Nightmare doesn't have any of Sans' usual abilities, like bones or Gaster Blasters, except for teleportation powers. The comic where Nightmare used his Gaster Blaster is now non-canon. Also non-canon is the fact that Nightmare had his own army of shadow Underfell!Papyrus. At least the author never used them anywhere else.
Nightmare does have his own castle, but its location is unknown.
The current Nightmare remembers almost nothing before the events when he became evil incarnate. Only humiliation and insults addressed to him (the former Nightmare), as well as eating black apples are his first clear memories. Naturally, he remembers that Dream is his brother. Nightmare is not affected by RESET, since he is an extra-code character.
He has one eye due to the huge amount of negativity he has absorbed. In fact, he has only one eye intact, which emits that same negativity 24/7, while the second one symbolizes his destroyed bone shell[4].
Thus, works where the true, past skeleton of Nightmare is hidden under a layer of negative are incorrect, since Nightmare's bone shell was destroyed. He wears the clothes of classic Sans, since in most universes Sanses wear similar clothes and if Nightmare does something in some universe, not being directly identified as Nightmare, but at the same time clearly noticed, then with a high probability the inhabitants of the universe will blame the local Sans for what Nightmare did. As Joku stated, his, Nightmare's, and Dream's birthday is December 21st.
December 21 is the last day of the Sagittarius zodiac sign.
This makes Dream and Nightmare Archers.
His mother (like Dream) is the keeper of the Tree of Feelings, Nim.
His mother may appear around him, but only as a dark and inconspicuous figure, not as a ghost or spirit that can be seen.
He is not originally a skeleton, just like his brother.
In fact, he only has one soul, not 999 as one might think. His soul is the first black apple that he absorbed, and the rest were absorbed by this same apple and formed a black-shaped semi-liquid shell around him.
He is furiously trying to take the last golden apple, which is now Dream's soul. Nightmare does this not only to make positive emotions no longer exist. Unlike his brother, Nightmare has no respect for Error (though they don't seem to get into fights often) or anyone who protects the balance of the multiverse. He doesn't care if Undertale and his AU die out, as he knows there are many other worlds. He still wouldn't want any mass killings, as it would take away any negative power he can get from people.

The black slime that surrounds him is an extremely powerful shield, making him invulnerable to most things; if he were to be pierced by something, his body would absorb it and no damage would occur. This applies not only to physical ones, but also to magical ones.

Story
Past
As a child, Nightmare cared for his brother, his homeland, and the tree that gave them life. Together with his brother Dream, he guarded the Tree as a Guardian. Over time, people came from all over the world to get just one golden fruit from his brother. But no one took the apples from Nightmare's side. Who wants to feel bad? And soon many began to avoid him. "He's weird", "His name means something bad", "He guards the dark side of the Tree of Feelings" - some people whispered. Nightmare began to be hated more and more, throwing everything they could at him. When he got some bruises, he told his brother that he tripped. Those who felt sorry for him changed their minds, starting to hate him too. After some time, he tried to prove to everyone that he was not bad, that he could take care of his brother's golden fruits, trying to touch the fruits from the Light side. But at his touch, the apples turned from golden to dark, similar to those that grew on his side due to Nightmare feeling fear and oppression. All the golden fruits turned black, the leaves of the Tree fell, and the sky turned scarlet. Dream saw all this. Meanwhile, the people and monsters were advancing, feeling hatred. Now, because of him, they will no longer be able to receive happiness. Dream tried to stop them, but he was literally trampled.

And suddenly, a voice commanded Nightmare to eat all the fruits. This voice did not sound like the voice of the Tree of Feelings spirit, but rather the opposite, as if someone else was standing behind him, giving this advice. As he devoured the dark fruits, his eye sockets filled with darkness, cracks appeared on his body. Soon, he vomited black mucus, and tentacles pierced his ribs. After a while, a black monster stood in the place of the guardian.

For a while there was a deathly silence, but soon it was broken by the sound of tentacles whistling through the air, cutting like blades into everyone in their path. This is an incomplete story of how he became what we know him as today[5].

Despite Nightmare's inability to show sympathy to anyone, he can in some way "sympathize" with those who share a similar fate to himself - rejected and mocked outcasts of society. Seeing such scenes, Nightmare falls into a wild rage and kills without a second thought anyone who mocked his kind in the past. This is the only manifestation of weakness and fear in him, although he tries to deny it, despite the fact that fear is also considered a negative emotion.

Unlike Dream, Nightmare is very well-read and intelligent, as he has had the opportunity to study information and travel across the multiverse for 500 years, spreading his negativity. Because of this, Nightmare acts like a fully grown character (one could say that he is an older brother to Dream).

Appearance
His current appearance is quite sinister. You can only see the outline of shorts, a hoodie, and slippers. He is completely black, with 4 tentacles that he can retract at will coming out of his back. His left eye constantly glows blue. This is due to the fact that his body is unstable and therefore constantly "melts"[4].

When Nightmare was younger, he had white bones. His pupils were lavender and he had no tentacles. He wore a jacket similar to his brother's, only his had long sleeves. It was covered by a golden belt with "NM" (Nightmare) on it. He wore black pants and dark purple boots. The top of his head was adorned with a golden tiara, with a crescent moon design.

Personality
Initially, before the bullying, Nightmare was quite a cocky and very confident brother. He always wanted to learn new things, even if it was something dangerous or not very good for various purposes. This habit has been passed on to the current Nightmare, as he reads books from time to time.[3]

Nightmare is quite attracted to negative emotions and will do everything to get as many of them as possible, meaning that killing victims makes no sense to him, since without them there will be no negative emotions he needs. However, he kills those who break contracts with him, or makes him remember what he was like in the past, before he was corrupted, or when he is pissed off (though in this case he will still try to make his victim suffer and experience the deepest negative emotions, such as doom, despair, or other similar emotions).

Nightmare never lies, he only hides the truth. He takes deals to heart, which is why he kills those who break them without question.
