Nicholas Burkhard was born on June 18, 1982, to Reed and Kelly Burkhard in Rhinebeck, New York.

In March 1994, Nick's father and a family friend were involved in a car accident that was orchestrated by Soledad Marquesa, Hans Rott, Ian Flynn, and Akira Kimura in an unsuccessful attempt to eliminate Nick's mother, Kelly, and steal the Zakynthos coins she was keeping. Shortly before the accident, Kelly left her son in the care of her sister, Marie, and secretly fled. Marie was forced to separate from her lover, Farley Colt, and took her nephew to Portland, Oregon.
