Monroe – The Bloodthirsty Man Who Chose Peace

Monroe is a rare (and special) example of a Blutbad who decided to control his violent instincts and live a peaceful life. Instead of succumbing to the predatory impulses typical of his species, he chose a more balanced and conscious path.

Lifestyle and discipline

Monroe follows a lifestyle called:

"More bloodshed" or "Another bloodbath"

(literally: "reformed Blight")

This term is used to describe Blutbaden who reject their violent nature and try to lead peaceful lives. This involves a strict routine of:

Self-discipline

Diet (vegetarian or without raw meat/blood)

Mental and physical exercises

Meditation and emotional control

Monroe, for example, is a watchmaker and plays the cello. He lives in a well-maintained house, likes antiques, and tries to stay as far away from violent situations as possible—although he is forced to act when he needs to protect someone.

Importance in the series

He is the first Wesen that Nick trusts and with whom he forms an alliance.

Over time, he became an important advisor on the Wesen world.

His relationship with Rosalee (a Fuchsbau) also shows how two Wesen of different species can love and work together.

Internal conflicts

Despite being a Wieder Blutbad, Monroe constantly struggles against his natural instincts, especially when there is threat or blood involved. This makes his character very human and complex.

(plural: bloodbaths) It means "bloodbath" in German — which already gives an idea of the dangerous reputation they have.

Description:

The Blutbad are Wesen who appear as ferocious wolves when they wogue. They are inspired by the Big Bad Wolf of fairy tales, especially the story of Little Red Riding Hood.

Main features:

Appearance in the woge: long snout, sharp fangs, bright red eyes, thick, hairy skin.

Increased strength and speed — they are physically powerful, with very sharp senses.

They have a strong predatory instinct, especially when they smell blood, which can make them dangerous if they lack self-control.

They can control their instincts with discipline, meditation, and practices such as vegetarianism (as in the case of Monroe).

They have exceptional scent and hearing, which is great for tracking.

Relationship with the Grimms:

Historically, the Blutbaden feared the Grimms, as many were hunted by them.

The relationship between Grimms and Blutbads improves in the series because of the friendship between Nick (a Grimm) and Monroe (a Blutbad) — one of the central bonds of the plot.

Curiosities:

The Blutbaden have a natural rivalry with the Bauerschwein (pig-like beings), inspired by the fable of the Three Little Pigs.

Some more savage Blutbaden form violent groups or packs, called Reinigen Rudel.

A Grimm is a human being with special abilities that allow them to see the true form of Wesen, even when they try to hide it. Grimms are like hunters and protectors of the balance between the human world and the Wesen.

Characteristics of the Grimms:

Special vision: they can see Wesen even when they are not fully wogued.

Above-average combat skills, quick reflexes, and great physical endurance.

They have genetic memory, and can quickly learn to fight and recognize creatures.

Historically, they were feared and hated by the Wesen, as many Grimms of the past hunted and killed without mercy.

They keep old books and diaries that document different types of Wesen and how to deal with them.

At the beginning of the series, Nick is a Grimm who knows little about this hidden world, but over the seasons, he learns to balance his role as a detective and a Grimm, even forming friendships with some Wesen.

Wesen (pronounced "veez-en," from the German word for "being") are supernatural creatures who live secretly among humans. They have a normal human form, but can "woguen," meaning they can partially or fully transform into their true form—usually inspired by animals, myths, or legends.

Main characteristics of Wesen:

They can only be seen in their true form by Grimms or by other Wesen (when they are woguing).

They have their own cultures, societies, and laws, often divided by clans or species.

Some are peaceful, others are dangerous or violent.

Their names and appearances often come from German (for example: Blutbad = wolf, Fuchsbau = fox, Hexenbiest = witch).

There are hundreds of types of Wesen throughout the series, each with unique abilities, instincts, and characteristics.

He was also very interested in accompanying Nick and Rosalee to help the Glühenvolk couple. ("Endangered")

Monroe tends to ramble on about subjects he is passionate about or well-informed on. Often, the information he pours out goes unnoticed by those listening. The topics generally vary, but the most common are the history of clocks and his family history.

Thinking about injuries to a person's eyes makes Monroe dizzy. ("Mr. Sandman")

(He was working behind the counter) saying that 'tightwad' almost had his throat ripped out. He is shown as Rosalee's protector and doesn't accept anyone who threatens her, as when he transformed and attacked Edgar Waltz ("Cat and Mouse") and Barry Kellogg ("A Furious Fuchsbau").

Therefore, he is often devastated or disturbed to learn that something terrible has happened to someone he considers a friend, as seen when his Wildermann friend, Larry, died ("Big Feet") and when Angelina died ("Only Over My Dead Body"). Monroe also seems to enjoy decorating his house extensively. Monroe is very good with children who love to trick-or-treat at his house on Halloween, due to his over-the-top and elaborate garden decorations and the large amount of candy he hands out. Monroe even defended a girl against neighborhood bullies who were trying to steal her candy. Monroe not only forced the bullies to return the candy to the girl, but also pulled the ear of the bully leader until the group apologized to the girl for stealing her candy ("La Llorona"). Monroe is also very creative and proud of his creations. Of course, not everyone appreciates his creativity: Rosalee isn't very enthusiastic about his sweets after trying his dandelion and seaweed scone ("Bad Hair Day").

Another striking characteristic of Monroe is his apparent belief in the inherent goodness of Wesen, not just his own kind. He agreed to accompany Nick in the search for Holly Clark in the woods ("Let Your Hair Down") and was shocked when two Blutbaden robbed a bank in their Wesen forms, interpreting this as a personal insult to his species ("Natural Born Wesen"). Later, he went to a Wesen bar, hoping someone there could provide information, despite knowing the clientele were "less than legitimate" Wesen. He was also very interested in accompanying Nick and Rosa.

Early in the series, Monroe was portrayed as a somewhat amoral character: he doesn't hunt humans, but at the same time, he does nothing to stop other Blutbaden from doing so. He claims this is because maintaining his own privacy and solitary existence from others of his kind encourages them to follow the same path; and it became clear in later episodes that he values human companionship and even has close friends and acquaintances who are human in this respect. He was also very hostile towards Nick; in "The Three Big Wolves," he yells at Nick about Angelina Lasser. Later, he develops high moral standards thanks to his interactions with Nick, as seen when Nick insisted he help him track down Holly Clark; Monroe was initially reluctant, until Nick showed him Holly's picture. When attacked by two Reapers for helping Nick, Monroe had reached a point where he enjoyed working with Nick to shake up the status quo, rejecting Nick's attempt to assure Monroe he wouldn't ask for help again. As an individual, Monroe possesses a rather laid-back personality and is generally calm and composed in most situations, though he can get slightly panicked at times, such as asking questions he answers himself. To match his laid-back personality, Monroe possesses a somewhat dry sense of humor, frequently making puns and sarcastic remarks. Monroe is also slow to anger, though he gets slightly irritated when someone or something prevents him from doing his daily Pilates. One of Monroe's strongest personality traits is his kindness and loyalty to those he considers his friends, which he has demonstrated many times towards Nick and Rosalee, and has romantic feelings for the latter. In "The Kiss," he became visibly irritated when Catherine Schade returned to the Spice Shop to pick up her orders from Rosalee, threatening her in the process; Monroe appeared later...

In his childhood, Monroe was a (mostly) typical Blutbad. While dating Angelina Lasser, he accidentally killed Alvin Perkins Sr., a forest ranger. When she tried to convince him not to worry about it, he vowed to change his lifestyle and enrolled in a support program. Among his fellow program participants were Hap, Angelina's brother, Larry Mackenzie, and Lemuel "Smitty" Smith. As part of his reformed lifestyle, he has closely monitored the now-needy Perkins family to ensure they are surviving; they ignore his help. ("The Icy Touch")

Today, Monroe is a Wieder Blutbad, or a reformed Blutbad who no longer lives on the wild side. ("Bears Will Be Bears") He grew up in Half Moon Lake, New Hampshire, where his parents, who are not Wieder Blutbaden, still live. ("Endangered") It wasn't always this way, and in the past, he, along with his Blutbad colleagues Hap and Angelina, lived a more dangerous life. Although he still has feelings for Angelina, Monroe is no longer in a relationship with her and is happy with his current peaceful life. ("The Three Bad Wolves") Monroe's family lineage has had many problems with the Grimms, so they likely don't share his point of view.

Although Monroe doesn't know German very well, he can read at a basic level, with pronunciation difficulties, but generally close to the original. High German was his grandfather's mother tongue, so he knows enough German to help Nick at a basic level in his research ("Three Coins in a Fuchsbau"). Monroe can also read Spanish ("Happily Ever After").

His great-grandfather was a cartographer in Colmar, now part of Alsace, France. When his family heirlooms were saved from a fire during the Franco-Prussian War, Monroe inherited a ton of things that were once his. ("In Danger")

Monroe is a notably tall man, several centimeters taller than Nick and a few centimeters taller than Hank, standing at 1.90 meters. As a result of his daily diet and Pilates, Monroe has a lean and slightly muscular build; appearing somewhat slender. He has brown eyes when untransformed and slightly wavy brown hair. He sports a sparse beard. In his Wesen form, his facial features become sharper and more pronounced, taking on a somewhat sculpted appearance. His hair changes from wavy and loose to spiky at the ends, forming a widow's peak hairline; while his beard becomes thicker.
