James comes from a pure-blooded magical family, which nevertheless respected Muggleborns and half-bloods. His family is quite wealthy.

Fleamont and Euphemia Potter had not been able to have children for a long time and were already desperate when Mrs. Potter unexpectedly found out about her pregnancy. By the time James was born, his parents were aged. Being the only late and desirable child, he grew up in an atmosphere of love and care.

At the beginning of his studies at Hogwarts, James becomes close to three other Gryffindors: Sirius Black, Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew. All four of them call themselves "Looters". After learning that Lupin is a werewolf (he was bitten by Fenrir the Grey as a child, and he transforms every full moon), the other three "Marauders" begin to train hard in transformations and become unregistered animagi by the fifth year.

At Hogwarts, James learns easily and successfully. He is also an excellent Quidditch player, and his achievements have been recognized with a special award. He plays as a hunter. Bold, open-minded, and attractive, James is popular with his peers, and teachers often turn a blind eye to his pranks. Nevertheless, he often stayed after school for punishment, especially in the company of Sirius, with whom he had the closest relationship of the "marauders". Both of them did not bother with cramming, preferring to learn by practice. It's hard to imagine James or Sirius poring over their textbooks — that was Lupin's lot. However, when the "Marauders" decided to become animagi, they had to delve into the theory. The result was worth it. It is not known exactly when James first noticed Lily Evans, but by the end of his fifth year, he was already actively courting her favor. Their relationship lasted about a year, after which Lily couldn't stand it and rejected him, leaving James free for a while.
