— James Potter and Sirius Black

Severus Snape was a Slytherin student, a withdrawn individual with few friends who showed an interest in the Dark Arts. James Potter attended Gryffindor, and was the opposite – sociable, cool, and a popular guy at school with his group of friends, the Marauders: Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew, and his girlfriend Lily Evans. Lucius Malfoy was a wealthy pure-blood wizard, also a Slytherin, Severus's best friend and classmate. Sirius Black was James's best friend, also mischievous, brave, and loved to play pranks. James often teased Severus because of his interests, and in general, Gryffindor and Slytherin were rivals. Lucius often snapped at James and his friends for bullying Severus. The Marauders and the Slytherin gang, consisting of Lucius, Severus, Barty Crouch Jr., Bellatrix, and Malacius, hated each other from their first year. But James Potter and Sirius Black had a secret. James was secretly in love with Severus Snape, and Sirius Black was in love with Lucius Malfoy. James and Sirius were always cool, mischievous, and always got into trouble, while Severus and Lucius were always reserved, gloomy, and composed. After classes and Quidditch, in the evening, the Marauders and Lily sat in the Gryffindor common room. Sirius sat on the floor, resting his head on the edge of the sofa, almost crying, thinking about how to attract Lucius's attention. Remus Lupin sat silently on the sofa next to him, and slightly irritated, gave Sirius a handkerchief. Peter Pettigrew also sat silently on the sofa next to James, who was also pondering how to attract Severus's attention. Lily Evans, their friend, silently watched first James, then Sirius.
