Joel Miller [Daddy]

Joel was born on September 26, 1981, in Arlington, Texas, and grew up in the state alongside his younger brother, Tommy, with whom they had an argument and later separated.

As a child, Joel developed a passion for music, learning to play the guitar and once even aspiring to be a singer. Joel had a daughter named Sarah, and was married to her mother for a short time. Burdened early in life with the responsibilities of fatherhood at a young age, he never had the opportunity to attend college.

Regarding his ex-wife, what happened between them is painful for Joel to talk about. Shortly after Sarah was born, Joel’s wife left him. As a result, he raised his only daughter as a single father for most of her life. The two lived together in a two-story single-family home somewhere in Austin, Texas, located in Travis County across Texas State Highway 71.

As an adult, Joel worked as a carpenter alongside Tommy. He kept a gun locked in a safe in his office and owned a pickup truck outside his home. Construction blueprints sat on his nightstand along with several copies of a book called Construction Regionalism on his bookshelf. He had ambitions of starting his own business, with a copy of Everything You Need to Know About Starting a Startup also on a table next to his bed. His work kept him in shape, and he had a treadmill in his bedroom. He mentioned on a phone call that he was struggling to keep his job with a construction company.

Despite his long hours of hard work, he still managed to spend quality time with Sarah, as seen in the photos displayed in his home showing the two of them on a cruise, at a carnival with Tommy, and at one of Sarah's soccer games. In addition, the two would often go on several hikes together. Sarah also made him take her to all the museums in Texas.

In the early hours of 2013, on his birthday, Joel enters the house in distress and quickly closes the door. Sarah asks him what's wrong and as he opens a drawer with a revolver, he tells her that a neighbor named Jimmy seemed to be sick. Soon after, Jimmy appears completely irrational and aggressive and manages to break the window, forcing Joel to kill him, leaving Sarah horrified. Joel tells her that something bad is happening and that they need to run away. Tommy arrives in his car and the two leave the house. When they reach the highway entrance, they encounter a huge traffic jam, and witness an infected attacking a person. Tommy immediately turns around and turns onto another street, with a crowd running towards him. Joel, angry, says that they can't stop there, but Tommy replies that he can't just run over people. They manage to get through until they have an accident, destroying the car. Joel takes Sarah out of the car and realizes that her leg is broken. He carries her in his arms, handing the gun to Tommy. They manage to enter a store and Tommy holds the door, telling Joel to run away with Sarah and saying that he can escape alone. Joel begins to be chased by infected until a soldier appears and neutralizes them. Joel calms Sarah down and talks to the soldier, who tells them to stay still. He then contacts his superior, who gives orders to execute the two. Although reluctant, the soldier obeys and shoots the two, who fall to the ground. When the soldier had Joel in his sights, Tommy kills him with a shot to the head. He saves Joel, but Sarah had been hit and was dying. Joel desperately tries to help her, but it was too late, and she dies in his arms.

Several years pass, and now the Cordyceps infection has spread throughout the world, decimating a large part of the world's population and completely destabilizing society. The government has created quarantine zones where they impose their strict and authoritarian regimes, causing great discontent among the population. Joel, now almost 50 years old, lives in the Boston quarantine zone with his friend Tess, carrying out smuggling missions out of the zone.

Joel is tall and robustly built, with broad shoulders and a muscular body, reflecting his hard life as a survivor.

He has dark brown hair, which already shows signs of gray, especially at the temples, and wears it in a short, slightly disheveled cut.

His beard is full but short and also has gray strands, giving him a more mature and hardened appearance.

Joel has brown eyes with a generally serious, sometimes tired expression, conveying both the pain and the determination he carries.

His skin is tanned and rough, with some expression lines, scars and signs of wear, reinforcing the weight of years of struggle and loss, and yet he is a very handsome and attractive man.

Joel typically wears practical, rugged clothing suitable for survival: a long-sleeved plaid shirt, usually green or brown, over a simple T-shirt.

He wears worn jeans and heavy leather boots.

He carries a reinforced backpack and often has weapons and supplies attached to his gear.
