The role of father returns

When Ellie is kidnapped by David, Joel goes into absolute protective father mode.

When he finds her after Ellie kills David, Joel hugs her and says:

"Okay. I'm here."

That is the exact moment when Joel becomes a father again.

The beginning of change

When the Fireflies task him with taking Ellie, Joel wants nothing to do with it.

But the journey forces them to live together. And little by little, Ellie breaks down her shell.

Joel begins to see her as a daughter… although he finds it hard to admit.

The man hardened by the world

In the quarantine zone, Joel is:

His only real relationship is with Tess, based more on convenience than deep affection.

Joel doesn't allow himself to love anyone.

The day of the outbreak is the most important moment for his character.

The soldier shoots and kills Sarah in front of Joel. At that moment Joel breaks down emotionally forever.

Thereafter:

It gets cold.

Loses empathy.

She shuts herself off emotionally.

He kills without hesitation to survive.

He spends 20 years running away from any emotional connection.

He works as a builder.

She lives with her daughter Sarah, her emotional driving force.

He is an ordinary man: responsible, caring, and tired of life but happy with it.

Joel is an incredibly deep man because his evolution is marked by trauma, loss, guilt, love, and morally gray decisions.
