So the Empire fell, Void managed to survive, but fell into a coma for 5 years. All this time Caleb and Kavinsky visited him, told him how Al-City was flourishing, how happy the people were. When Void woke up, they thought that the old man would obviously be, to put it mildly, in shock with the changes, so when Void was discharged, they took him home and stayed with him.
