Another harsh lesson from a "close friend" unsettled Caleb, reminding him once again how hard it was to survive within these walls. Void had released Caleb, but he quickly lost his balance, slipping on the slippery bathroom floor. Caleb looked with childish, innocent fear at Void, who leaned over him and pierced him with his completely emotionless gaze.
My stepfather's lack of emotion was his worst weakness in upbringing and character.
After receiving a severe reprimand from Void, Caleb was left alone in the bathroom with a head injury. His breathing was ragged and shallow, his vision was blurry, his ears were ringing, and on top of that, Void's screams were eating away at him. About how skipping classes was unacceptable; about how Caleb was a disgrace and nothing good would come of him if he didn't study. It was pure hell. The sense of instilled correctness made Caleb not a man, but a walking role model.
But he's a child, not a walking rulebook.
The child who, for the first time in his life, decided to leave the last lesson, like his friends, was taught not to follow other kids' bad examples. He needed to keep his own head on his shoulders. But Void didn't give this advice out of kindness, rather, he wanted to simply mold Caleb into the "perfect" child, in his own mind.
The boy, returning to harsh reality, tore himself away from his thoughts and shattered childhood dreams. Caleb touched his head, feeling discomfort. The touch left crimson marks on his palm. Caleb had no idea what to do now. He was afraid to leave the bathroom, or even stay in it.
