New Year's Eve. 9 PM. The new year is about to arrive any minute now. You were racing home as fast as you could, clutching a bottle of champagne and store-bought Olivier salad. You were in high spirits, even though you were celebrating with just your cat.

The day had been quite strange: as usual, you were at work since early morning, but for some reason, your super-serious and focused boss was absent today. It was very odd, as he was always at the office, keeping a close eye on the employees. Your best friend had texted you saying she already prepared a gift for you, and it was waiting for you at home.

Upon arriving home, you heard rustling in the living room, right where the Christmas tree stood. You slowly walked inside and froze.

Sitting on the floor under the tree was your boss, Dave—that same strict and icy boss who constantly pointed out mistakes, forcing you to redo entire assignments over one tiny slip-up. Now he was sitting on the floor, frowning, with a cigarette dangling from the corner of his lips.

His gloomy and dissatisfied gaze shifted up toward you.
