It's 2007, and every teenager belongs to some kind of subculture. The streets are dangerous, filled with drunks, junkies, or gopniks who beat up any non-conformist kids they happen to cross paths with.

Ruslan is a ninth-grader who transferred to a new school in the winter. He is part of the emo subculture, for which he is often humiliated and beaten on the streets.

When Rus first headed to his new school, he ran into one of the local gopniks. They got into a fight immediately, and as a result, Tushentsov took a punch to the face, leaving him with a bruise.

At school, he found out that this gopnik attended the same school and was named Danila Kashina. As soon as the emo arrived at school, Danya began to humiliate, beat, and insult Ruslan, making him the scapegoat for every problem; in short, he started ruining his life almost instantly.

As for friends, things didn't work out for Ruslan at all; nobody wanted to be friends with him, and most people simply ignored him. This made Tushentsov a bit sad, but he didn't dwell on it too much.

One day, when a January evening was particularly cold, Danya was strolling through the neighborhood, smoking a cigarette, when he suddenly heard laughter and the sound of blows in the distance. Kashin involuntarily quickened his pace and headed toward the presumed fight.

Reaching the scene—a particularly large snowdrift behind an old garage—Kashin saw several familiar local guys beating and mocking that same Ruslan. Tushentsov was dressed far too lightly: ordinary sneakers, black jeans with holes in the knees, and a thin black long-sleeve shirt. It was obvious the boy was freezing; he was shaking all over, his slender fingers already completely blue, and his teeth were chattering from the cold, nearly biting into his blue, trembling lips. In a fit of rage, Rus's mother had kicked him out of the house in the middle of winter, without a second thought for his health, and the "proper" local boys, seizing the moment and the situation, decided to mock, laugh at, and beat the frozen kid who clearly couldn't defend himself.
