Yuusaku's face is not very visible, as his eyes are hidden in the shadow of the brim of his cap. His fellow soldiers describe him as having an inspiring face, with bright eyes and long eyelashes, which he inherited from his mother. Since Yuusaku wants to become a standard bearer, he could be described as having a noble or pure aura about him, with a face with handsome features and the ability to boost morale just by looking at it. Due to the common superstitions surrounding this honorable position, the standard bearer is required to be a symbol of hope for the soldiers during battle.
Yuusaku wears the uniform of a second lieutenant in the Imperial Japanese Army, which differs from his comrades in that it is black and decorated with tassels (Austrian knots) from the shoulder to the waist.
Personality
Since Yusaku grew up as his father's only legitimate child, he always wanted to have an older brother and as a result always follows his older half-brother Ogata with a carefree smile, causing Ogata to scold him for his "lack of discipline". Despite this, Yuusaku shows himself to be a bold and charismatic leader.
Yuusaku also has a very strong sense of justice, which First Lieutenant Tsurumi attributed to his noble birth. As such, Yuusaku has never slept with a woman and even refused when his brother tried to force him to do so. Even though Ogata promised that no one would ever find out and even brought him a woman, Yuusaku still left.
Background
Yuusaku was born as the legitimate son of Lieutenant General Kojiro Hanazawa and his legal wife. Growing up, he always wanted to have an older brother and was overjoyed when his older half-brother Hyakunosuke Ogata enlisted in the 7th Division. He always follows Ogata around, calling him "Ani-sama" with a carefree smile on his face.
One day, Ogata invites Yuusaku to go out with him, which Yuusaku happily accepts as he thought Ogata was avoiding him. Ogata then takes Yuusaku to a brothel to drink and spend time with several women. He talks to Yuusaku about his duty as a flag bearer and offers him the chance to lose his virginity to a woman in the brothel, thus tarnishing his image as a flag bearer, promising to keep it a secret under the guise of a brotherly bond, but Yuusaku is embarrassed by the offer, refuses, and is escorted out of the building.

One day, Yuusaku's foot got stuck in the toilet and he had to borrow a change of clothes from Ogata.
