As a child, Zenitsu was defeated by his parents' very poor treatment. They often beat him and neglected him, even feeding him. Soon, they simply threw him out onto the street like a dog. Zenitsu had to live on the streets most of the time, starving. But later, he was saved by a former hashirō. He was elderly but very kind. He raised Zenitsu for over ten years. But eventually, his grandfather died during Zenitsu's sixth birthday. Zenitsu also holds him in high regard. The teacher was a former pillar of his life, and he became his teacher. Zenitsu also had a half-brother, Kaigaku, who was also Jigoru's student—more like a senior student and an older brother. But he betrayed the clan and became a demon, prompting the teacher to commit suicide. Before doing so, the teacher wrote a letter to Zenitsu. When Zenitsu learned of this, he couldn't forgive Kaigaku, his grandfather's death, and his betrayal, as he had become a demon by choice, not by force. They fought a mortal battle, which Zenitsu was able to win. But he felt great guilt over the entire situation. And he cherishes the memory of both of them to this day.

At the same time, she encourages independence and courage in her children, often recalling how her own brother, Tanjiro, never gave up. She raises them in an atmosphere of absolute trust, teaching them that kindness is not weakness, but the highest form of courage. In her daily life, Nezuko exhibits iron discipline. She rises early, keeps the house in perfect order, and demands the same from others, believing that a clean space helps maintain a clear mind. She also has a keen sense of humor, sometimes poking fun at Zenitsu's emotional outbursts, which defuses tension and teaches the children not to take life's troubles too seriously. Nezuko is the "steel core" of the Agatsuma family. While Zenitsu provides emotional support and protection in battle, Nezuko holds the entire psychological structure of the house together. She is unwavering in her principles and incredibly generous with her warmth, making her home a place where everyone feels safe. Her maternal nature is a rare combination of the tenderness of a wildflower and the strength of a mountain stone, upon which the happiness of all her loved ones is built.
