Hisoka has a harlequin-like appearance, with magician-like features. He has a painted face with a fuchsia-colored star on his cheek. Later on, these colors change: the star is bright yellow and the tear is fuchsia.

He changes his outfit in each story arc, always with motifs related to the poker deck. In his first appearance, the top part consists of puffy sleeves and the suit is light blue. The following times he appears, these sleeves disappear, revealing his strong arms. The main colors he uses in his combinations are black, green and again blue. He usually wears matching socks and his shoes are like those of a jester, with the toe curled upwards and sometimes with a heel. Always black.

During the "Netero's Succession: New President Election" arc, Hisoka wears two heart-shaped earrings. Hisoka's eyes are a mustard yellow color, and his hair is a reddish color that appears pink at first glance.

His talent and skill have made him a very self-confident individual. He looks out for his own interests and acts for his own benefit, doing whatever he wants whenever and however he wants, without following any rules or emotional ties. His only motivation seems to be to defeat opponents chosen according to his own criteria, going so far as to wait patiently for a rival he deems worthy (Gon, Killua and Kalluto). He also seems to be excited by this fact, as well as facing people who surpass, or may surpass in the future, his skills. Hisoka temporarily joins the Genei Ryodan (Phantom Troupe), a feared group of thieves and assassins, in order to have the opportunity to fight against the group's leader, Chrollo Lucilfer.

Little is known about Hisoka's past, due to the fact that he is not interested in it. However, during his fight with Gon on the 200th floor of the Sky Coliseum, Hisoka reveals that his techniques are based on sweets and candies that he enjoyed as a child.

Skills and powers
Hisoka has all the benefits granted by his status as a Hunter. Known for his graceful, cruel, and deceitful fighting ability, Hisoka himself has proven to be a deadly adversary. However, he has never shown his true abilities, making him willing to fight enemies renowned for their terrifying power. For example, he pondered that he provoked Illumi (whose strength scored 95 points, even surpassing 3 Zodiacs) into having a fight to the death with him, and even longed to face Ging Freecss and Isaac Netero. Apparently, he does not fight according to any traditional martial art, combining his enormous physical attributes with razor-sharp poker cards, an unpredictable mind, and an insatiable thirst to kill. By forming a circle with his index finger and thumb and looking through it, he can enhance his vision. It is unclear if this is a Nen ability.

Bungee Rubber (伸縮自在の愛バンジーガム Stretchy Love) Hisoka can alter the consistency of his aura into a sticky substance incredibly resembling chewing gum, albeit much stronger. Bungee Rubber can stretch and contract, depending on Hisoka's wishes. It can be attached either by aiming at its target or by direct physical contact. It is so reliable and durable that it can act as a shield against attacks or as a means of returning to its original caster. When not connected to Hisoka's body, Bungee Rubber cannot stretch further than 10 meters. Hisoka has named this ability after a candy he liked as a child. He has shown the ability to alter his Bungee Rubber's shape and color. The connection to objects or opponents can only be broken by Hisoka's command. And it is only possible to see using Gyo.

Hisoka can imbue his aura into any surface and change its appearance, making a perfect copy of whatever he intends. This ability is impossible to detect visually without the Gyo ability, however, contact makes the deception obvious. Hisoka has named this ability in this way by a candy brand that contained a surprise. After his fight with Kastro in the Celestial Tower, it is revealed that the tattoo on his back was a fake, made of cloth. In York Shin City, Hisoka also changed the words in the prediction written for him by Kuroro. He did something similar on Greed Island in his letter book, in order to trick Gon and Killua into thinking that he hadn't encountered any Spider members there.
