Silver is a fictional character in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. He is an anthropomorphic hedgehog from at least 200 years in the future, capable of traveling between the future and the past to protect his timeline. For his mission, Silver makes use of his psychokinesis, an ability from his time that is considered the norm, which allows him to move objects with the power of his mind.

Appearance Silver is a light grey (almost white) anthropomorphic hedgehog with white fur on his chest surrounding his neck with golden eyes and tan skin. He wears white gloves with cyan circles with lines protruding from the bottom leading to his cyan accented gold bracers. The tops of his boots are in a similar fashion with a red gem set in gold. The rest of his boots are navy blue, white, and cyan. He has two large spikes on the back of his head, while on the front of his forehead are five distinct spikes that arch up and back, with the last two covering most of his ears.

History Past Silver has three conflicting backstories for Sonic the Hedgehog (2006). On the game's website, he states that he came from a happy future that was never destroyed and ended up in the past where he learned his future would be destroyed and tries to stop it from changing for the worse. In the game's guide, it is implied that Silver is from the present and ends up in the future; where he learns that it was destroyed during the events in Sonic the Hedgehog and goes to find what would destroy the future when he returns to the past (though it is mentioned in a cutscene that he is from the future, see below). The actual backstory is in the game, with Silver living in a destroyed future and going back in time to change the future for the better.

Silver is at least two hundred or more years in the future of Sonic's world. In Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), while Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles are exploring the town he lives in, Knuckles says, "How could this be our future?". The second and third times the player discovers that Silver's world is the future of Sonic's world are in Sonic Rivals and Sonic Rivals 2, respectively. Just before Eggman Nega turns Sonic's world into a card, Silver clearly says "What?! But that will mean my future will be destroyed too!". In Sonic Rivals 2, he tells Espio and Knuckles, "I have to save your world or my world will be destroyed too!".

Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) Sonic 2006 - Silver's Story Silver thinking about his world. Silver first appeared in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006). In the distant, post-apocalyptic future, Silver was flying through a ruined city until his best friend and partner, Blaze, showed up and informed him that Iblis had appeared again. Silver flew off, with Blaze following behind on foot. Once they reached their destination, they found that Iblis had risen from the lava. The two defeated Iblis, but Silver grew frustrated that they were unable to completely destroy him. He and Blaze then notice Mephiles rising atop the remains of a building, who tells them that if they want to change the future, they must go back in time to kill the Iblis Seed, the individual responsible for Iblis' resurrection. Mephiles claims that the Iblis Seed is Sonic, and sends himself, Blaze, and Silver back in time to when Sonic was still alive, though the trio were separated from each other in the process. Silver found Sonic after his failed attempt to save Princess Elise from Dr. Eggman during the Sun Festival. Before he could act, Silver was distracted by Amy when she mistook him for Sonic. Amy offered to help him find the person he was looking for, but Silver was unwilling to accept her help. He eventually decided to help Amy in exchange for her help, though neither of them knew that they were both looking for the same person: Sonic.

Silver making fun of Sonic. Shortly after, Silver encountered Sonic and attacked him. Sonic initially had the upper hand, but Silver used his psychokinesis to take Sonic by surprise and throw him into a wall, incapacitating him. Silver wondered if Mephiles was joking, wondering how someone as weak as Sonic could be the Seed of Iblis. Sonic attempted to run after Silver as Dr. Eggman recaptured Elise, but was stopped in his tracks by Silver and was about to deliver the finishing blow when Amy intervened, allowing Sonic to escape. Silver told Amy that the world would be devastated due to Sonic's actions, but Amy refused to believe that Sonic would do such a thing, she then left Silver in anger. Disheartened, Silver left to ponder whether killing Sonic to save the future was truly the right thing to do.

Silver facing Mephiles. Blaze found Silver at the docks, and after a conversation, she convinced him that they had to save the future by any means necessary. After failing to locate Sonic at Eggman's base at White Acropolis (though they did acquire Elise's Blue Emerald there), they encountered Mephiles, who told them that Sonic was at the Terminal Station. After tracking him down, Silver attacked Sonic with his psychokinesis once more, allowing Eggman to capture Elise once more in the confusion. Again, Silver was about to deliver the finishing blow when Shadow (whom Silver mistook for Mephiles) intervened, again allowing Sonic to escape. The two fought to a standstill, and Shadow used Chaos Control to evade Silver's intended blow and kicked Silver in the back of his head, knocking him to the ground. Refusing to be defeated and desperate to save his world, Silver pulled out his Chaos Emerald and copied Shadow in performing Chaos Control, causing the two to accidentally open a time portal. Shadow was impressed by Silver's Chaos Control, but suspected that Mephiles might have darker intentions due to the orders he had given Silver. He asked Silver to follow him to the day the Solaris Project went haywire so that they could find out what really happened.

Silver paralyzing Iblis to get Duke of Soleanna to react. Once they arrived, Shadow and Silver witnessed the failure of the project firsthand, with a machine exploding and the Duke of Soleanna severely injured while protecting a younger Elise. The hedgehog duo decided to split up; Shadow pursued Mephiles while Silver pursued Iblis. Silver tracked down Iblis and paralyzed him with his psychokinesis and the dying Duke (despite Silver's insistence that he flee) took the opportunity to use a Chaos Emerald to seal Iblis within Elise's unconscious body, entrusting Silver to escort her to safety. Silver took Elise out of the lab and encountered Shadow who had successfully captured Mephiles. Silver left Elise by a nearby tree, while Shadow left the Scepter of Darkness with her, knowing what would happen in the future. Together they opened a time portal to the present, which Shadow immediately jumps into. Silver was about to follow him when he hears Elise calling out for her father in his sleep. Feeling bad for her, Silver gave Elise his blue Chaos Emerald and then followed Shadow through the portal.

Silver helping Sonic go back in time with Chaos Control. Upon their return, Silver revealed to Blaze that Mephiles had lied about Sonic being the Seed of Iblis and realized that Eggman might be intending to free Iblis. Silver and Blaze helped Sonic save Elise from Eggman, to which Sonic accepted their help. However, they witnessed the Egg Carrier crash into a mountain and explode, killing Elise and Eggman. After a moment of grief, Sonic and Silver used Chaos Control to allow Sonic to travel back in time to before the Egg Carrier left Eggman's base to save Elise, and Sonic gave Silver his Chaos Emerald to return Silver and Blaze to their own time, which they do.

Sonic 2006 - Silver's Ending Silver seeing the light of day after Blaze's sacrifice. Silver and Blaze then defeated Iblis once again and he attempted to use himself as Iblis' vessel. Though he was not accepted, Blaze was. She sealed Iblis within herself and used Chaos Control to teleport herself to another dimension, much to Silver's dismay and sadness.

Silver's profile in Sonic Generations. The best way to describe Silver is that he has "a strong sense of justice" and it is this personality trait that motivates him to go back in time to right the future. He believes in standing up for those who cannot stand up for themselves. This led him to take Blaze in when everyone else was teasing her for her pyrokinetic abilities. When he goes after an enemy, he does so with relentless determination. He makes alliances and rivalries very easily and takes people at their word without question; this causes him to be easily fooled by others. According to his character profile in Sonic Generations, he is an optimist (though, as he states himself in Sonic Forces, while he is an optimist, he is also a realist). Silver is a kind-hearted and well-meaning person, driven by a strong sense of justice to right past wrongs and maintain peace, though he is somewhat naive and immature. Despite the monumental tasks he may have at hand, he is an optimist and will do whatever it takes to protect the world.

Although seemingly serious on the outside, one interview states that Silver is young and somewhat immature. Blaze comments on this several times, describing him as naive and insecure when he's alone. Silver is also a regular charmer, always ready to protect those in need and help out. He usually maintains a positive attitude and never loses hope, no matter how objectively hopeless the situation is.

Silver wears his heart on his sleeve. He feels anger and joy intensely and loudly, but his sadness is quiet and barely, if ever, marked by tears. He lets his anger control him and cheerfully comments on the things that make him happy, but he barely says a word in his sadness, even though it is visible to everyone. However, even when he feels sad, he never despairs, always looking for the solution in the right way. His determination and little regard for pain can make him a very scary opponent.

Silver is very brave and courageous, willing to fearlessly sacrifice himself for another at the drop of a hat. Utterly unwavering in the face of danger, he is brave to the point of foolishness and is focused on snuffing out evil with little regard for his own safety.

He apparently has a competitive streak and gets somewhat cocky and prickly in the heat of the moment, as seen in Sonic Rivals 2; when playing as him and passing your rival, he will say "I'm better", or if you win a race or battle, he will say "Who's the best?". In Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity, when you win a race, he says "I'm not to be trifled with!" and in Sonic Free Riders he taunts you by saying "SEE YOU LATER!" as he passes a fellow competitor. In Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), he usually refers to Iblis' monsters and Eggman's robots as "trash", and usually congratulates himself in a smug tone when dispatching a room full of them.

When meeting anyone who gets in his way, especially in Sonic Rivals and Sonic Rivals 2, Silver can be shown to be grumpy and bossy towards anyone who does not explicitly aid him in his mission, sometimes even becoming outright hostile and starting a fight with a poor choice of words.

When Silver isn't focused on his current mission or doesn't have a task at hand, however, he's very friendly, helpful, and a good companion to have.

Powers and abilities Psychokinesis Psychokinesis Silver using Psychokinesis. Silver's primary power is his psychokinesis, the ability to manipulate the environment around him with the power of his mind. Silver is an ultimate master of this ability, as he is able to telekinetically grab and move up to several objects many times larger than his own size and weight, as either an individual or collective mass, with his most impressive feat being his Meteor Smash attack, where he forms a compressed ball of objects over twenty times his own size and could weigh a net total of several tons. However, it is unknown how much he can grab at once. Silver can also use his psychokinesis on himself to allow him to not only float, but also fly at speeds rivaling Sonic's. Additionally, his psychokinesis functions as a force field, as seen in Sonic Forces when he used this ability to fight a powerful being like Infinite to a brief standstill. Granted, Infinite does inflict damage on Silver, but he still hits him hard enough to force him to throw a prototype of the Phantom Ruby.

Silver's psychokinesis is a powerful force of its own. With it, he can exert enough pressure to bend half-meter-thick steel bars, crush robots with a single grab, and immobilize the movements of others completely. By repelling objects with his psychokinesis, Silver can throw them with enough force and speed to crush metal, fly tremendous distances, and even stun massive monsters like Iblis. Additionally, Silver can also use his psychokinesis to grab onto certain non-solid objects, such as fireballs and certain types of energy blasts.

Silver can also use his psychokinesis to project pure psychic energies that he can manipulate into energy-based attacks such as razor-sharp blades, pulses to attack his targets at all ranges, and a burst of energy that can paralyze his targets. In addition to offense, Silver can apply his psychokinesis to his other abilities. He can use it for the ability of ESP, giving him extra-sensory perception that allows for limited telepathy, but so far only enough to induce limited vertigo in others. He can also use it to teleport short distances instantly into distorted space.

Physical skills While not shown during his introduction, Silver is capable of moving at super speeds which are an innate talent possessed by members of the hedgehog species. As seen in Sonic Rivals and Sonic Rivals 2, Silver is capable of running at speeds comparable to Sonic and Shadow, without wearing himself out. Additionally, as another example, he is also seen in the loops within Crisis City from Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), able to maintain his running speed without falling, as Shadow was similarly seen finishing the first stage of Crisis City.

Silver has incredible physical durability and resilience, as seen in the console/PC version of Sonic Generations, where he withstood several hits from Sonic's Homing Attack, slid across the ground for long distances without damage, and even managed to survive being buried under what could be several tons' worth of rubble.

Silver has been shown to be very acrobatic and agile, able to jump and move gracefully in the air, with and without the aid of his psychokinesis, and can glide on rails at great speeds to match several characters, such as Sonic and Shadow with combat boots, with one exception for staying in a single stance, which his abilities are almost incomplete at, as a testament to his balance and agility. He also has lightning-fast reflexes and senses, and is able to mimic and match the movements of Sonic and Shadow. Additionally, he can do incredible feats, such as picking up objects while moving in the air at great speeds, catching bullets with his psychokinesis, or causing any monster he comes across to be suspended, combining his impressive accuracy with his psychokinesis anyway, he is able to throw enemies and heavy objects at the same speed as projectiles, without his arms getting tired.

Silver has shown the ability to harness the power of the Chaos Emeralds to empower himself or even perform Chaos Powers. So far, the only Chaos Power he has been able to perform is Chaos Control, which allows him to warp time and space, sealing anyone along with him in another dimension he can choose. However, this was mentioned by Blaze the Cat, at the end of Silver's Story from Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), and can be empowered by enhancing his own abilities, or to a further degree, giving him psychic energies.

Combat skills Silver is one of the most powerful and deep fighters in the series, as he can fight on par with most battle-experienced individuals in the series. He has been hinted to be equal in power to Shadow the Hedgehog, and in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) he was able to fight Shadow and nearly bring Sonic to the brink of death, though Sonic was careless during their fight in the latter instance.

Fighting style In combat, Silver relies heavily on his psychokinesis and uses the environment to his advantage. Unlike most characters who utilize melee combat, Silver focuses on long-range attacks. When fighting, Silver constantly keeps his distance from the enemy, as he needs a moment to focus on an attack, which will leave him vulnerable. However, if an opponent gets too close, he can trap them with his psychokinesis and launch them away.

Silver's primary method of attack is to pick up objects around him with his psychokinesis and hurl them at his opponents. He can also occasionally rearrange these objects into colossal conglomerate forms as more effective means of attack, such as giant balls to knock opponents away and train-sized battering rams. If projectiles are fired at him, Silver can catch them in his psychokinesis and hurl them back at the opponent, allowing him to turn his opponents' power against them.

When times call for it, Silver is capable of going on the offensive with hand-to-hand combat, as seen in his battle with Shadow in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), and in Sonic Rivals and Sonic Rivals 2 where he would attack enemies with physical strikes. However, his mastery of this type of combat is unclear, as he has only demonstrated a limited range of strikes and Spin Attack maneuvers. He appears to not be an expert, given his reckless, telegraphed, and easily blocked charges at Shadow during their fight, and it is possible that Silver only uses physical combat as a desperate last resort.

Techniques and movements Most of Silver's signature techniques and moves revolve around the use of his psychokinesis, which has a wide range of applications. Most of his offensive attacks involve using the objects around him as projectiles and discharging psychokinetic energies.

Silver's most commonly used technique is his Psychokinesis, which allows him to pick up objects around him so he can manipulate, bend, and move them. His Levitate technique, which he uses to fly through the air, increases his speed and movement ability to levels that match those of the fastest and most agile characters in the series. Additionally, his Teleport Dash allows him to run short distances at the speed of light.

With his Grab All technique, Silver can grab and manipulate everything around him or objects that come near him and send them flying towards his enemies. To throw objects with greater force while they are in his Psychokinetic Grab, Silver can use his Hold Smash and Psycho Smash to charge up his psychic energies and use them to throw objects at high speeds. Additionally, in Sonic Generations, Silver can perform a powerful attack called Meteor Smash, where he picks up a large ball of objects surrounding him and throws it, after which it rolls along the ground, crushing anything in its path.

By channeling and manipulating his psychic energies, Silver can perform unique energy-based attacks such as his Psycho Shock and Psycho Smash which allow him to charge up pulses of energy that can paralyze opponents and machinery, and with his Psychic Knife, Silver can form and throw a sharp and deadly blade of energy at the enemy. He can also perform his ESP move, which sends out a wave that attacks the minds of others, leaving them disoriented and confused.

In Sonic Rivals and Sonic Rivals 2, Silver is shown to utilize the Spin Attack, where he tightly curls himself into a concussive ball while in locomotion to damage, slice through, or smash through obstacles and enemies. The Spin Jump sees him attack enemies by landing on them, the Spin Dash sees him curl up and shoot forward at high speeds to break through barriers or attack enemies, and the Homing Attack sees him target an enemy to attack.

Curiosities At 14 years old, Silver is one of the youngest rivals in the Sonic series, tied for first place with Jet the Hawk. Super Smash Bros. Brawl references the events of Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) in Silver's trophy, despite the game not being released on the Wii or any Nintendo console. The trophy also looks similar to the one from Super Sonic. One controversy based on Silver is the 5 spikes on his forehead. Fans think it resembles a cannabis plant (aka marijuana). In reality, the spikes are based on the Japanese maple leaf. In Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), the opening scene of Sonic's story shows Silver saying "I've finally found it, the Seed of Iblis.", while clenching his right fist. Behind him, sparks are flying, presumably remnants of Eggman's attack at the Sun Festival. However, in Silver's story, he clenches his left fist and there are no sparks to be seen behind him. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Silver is the only hedgehog whose trophy can only be obtained once. (Shadow and Amy's trophies are obtained randomly, and Sonic's trophies can be earned by completing Classic Mode multiple times.)

Silver is the only hedgehog that is not a Speed-type. Instead, Silver can be considered a Flying-type character since it uses its Psychokinesis to fly. However, in Sonic Runners he is a Speed-type character, making him the first character to officially change formation across different games, followed by Blaze the Cat in the same game who switched from Speed to Strength-type. This excludes the most recent ESP Silver character in the game, in which case he is again classified as a Flying-type character. In an interview with Shun Nakamura, Silver was originally going to appear in a different game about psychokinetic powers with a realistic aesthetic, but they ended up scrapping the title and borrowing its concepts for Sonic the Hedgehog (2006). The interview also reveals that during the design process, Silver's hair and boots were finalized first and last, respectively.

A screenshot of Silver using his ESP was used in the Psychic section of the Encyclopedia Horrifica book. It is unknown how Silver travels through time in Sonic Rivals, Sonic Rivals 2, and the DS version of Sonic Colors. In Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), he travels through time with the help of Mephiles, Shadow, or Sonic. In Sonic Generations, it is implied that Silver is brought back from the future by the Time Eater, though this is never seen. It is also not seen how Silver returns to his future after the game. In one of the Sonic Channel's news reports, however, it is said that Silver travels through time using Chaos Control. Sonic, Shadow and Silver are the same height: 3 feet and 3 inches (1 meter). They also weigh the same: 77 lb (or 35 kg). They also have a shared phrase which is "This is the end of the line for..." first used by Shadow, and eventually by Silver, while Sonic said it in Shadow the Hedgehog. Silver is the only boss in the console/PC version of Sonic Generations that does not confront the player in his original location, as he is fought in Crisis City. Although many fans have speculated that Silver is related to Shadow due to Sir Lancelot and Sir Galahad's relationship in Arthurian legend (where the latter is the son of the former), Takashi Iizuka has confirmed that Silver is not a descendant of Shadow the Hedgehog.
