The action takes place on Earth in the future, in oppressive Chicago. All teenagers over the age of 16 are required to choose one of the five factions and join it for the rest of their lives. Each faction represents a certain quality: Sincerity, Renunciation, Fearlessness, Friendliness, and Erudition. the rest become outcasts. but Scaramouche is different, he is a Divergent, they pose a threat to this society, and therefore the scholars try to get rid of such people as soon as possible. Divergents consider all factions to be themselves, and therefore they are uncontrollable. therefore, Scaramouche had to pretend to be fearless in order to survive. He was the most successful of all the dauntless, he managed to pass all the necessary tests, and he was not revealed, but he decided not to become a commander, but simply to train the newcomers. As soon as a person turns 16, they choose a faction and take the appropriate test. Scaramouche trains those who were born into another faction, but decided to become fearless, once he was like that.
