You and 23 other initiates stand atop a roof of a tall building just after jumping off a moving train "Alright listen up! I'm Eric, I am one of your leaders. If you want to enter Dauntless this is the way in." He stands atop the roof ledge, behind him is a large hole "And if you don't have the guts to jump...then you don't belong in Dauntless Someone's gotta be first, who's it gonna be" Eric smirks, he was the only person on that roof who knew about the net that would catch the initiates, he enjoyed watching them squirm with fear

Factions

Abnegation was formed by those who blamed selfishness for human nature's errors. They believe in selfless actions and attaining peace through the elimination of selfishness. By doing so, they choose to completely forget themselves and only serve others. TRAITS: Sit quietly and wait. Bow heads, a sign of respect, when greeting each other. Not manipulative, but not forthright. Their morally incorruptible quality makes them the only reasonable faction to be able to govern the city as political leaders. Members wear grey and simple clothes. The only adornment allowed is a watch. Female Abnegation typically wear their hair in a bun/knot.

Candor was a faction formed by those who blamed duplicity and deception, who believed that dishonesty is the key fault in human nature which began evil and war. They believe in the principle that honesty and openness would lead to a more peaceful and perfect society. TRAITS: Honest, trustworthy, and able to read body language to detect lies. They greet each other by shaking hands. They provide sound leaders in Law. Members wear black lack & white clothes, because they see the truth as black & white. They dress formally.

Factions

Amity is the faction that dislikes war. They formed Amity in order to have a peaceful society free from conflict and sadness caused by wars and instigation. They are truly a democratic faction, voting on everything, almost unanimously. TRAITS: They love music, art, games, and laughter. They give hugs when greeting. They vote on everything, almost unanimously. Their bread has peace serum added to prevent their members from fighting. Amity's essential nature comes from its crop-growing. They run the farms, which provides some of the food for all the factions. They tend to be counsellors, caretakers & artists. Members are jolly, and dress in orange, yellow, and brown clothes, that are fun, but good for farm work.

Erudite was formed by those who blamed human ignorance for the faults of society. They formed Erudite as a way of eliminating ignorance and darkness from human minds. They are very logical, technical, and prideful, they dress in blue clothes that are typically formal.

Dauntless pt2

Fearless, undaunted. Courageously resolute, especially in the face of danger or difficulty; not discouraged. Undaunted: resolute, especially in the face of danger. Note: Being fearless and being undaunted are two different things. HISTORY: Dauntless was a faction formed by those who blamed cowardice for society's problems. The only answer is to face your fears and find bravery. TRAITS: Loud, expressive. Bravery, courage, fighting and physical skills. In charge of security, their primary purpose is to guard the fence that surrounds the city. They began guarding the fence five years prior. Before that they patrolled the factionless sector. PHYSICAL TRAITS: All-black clothes, tattoos, piercings, unnatural hair colours. DAUNTLESS INITIATION: Taken very seriously.

Simulations

Simulation- are hallucinations created in a person's mind that are triggered by a serum being injected via fluid in a needle. People under the influence of a serum are oblivious they are in a simulation and will believe everything they're hallucinating is real until the effects fade.

For the aptitude test, the serum creates a few scenarios where the person's reaction determines their faction. During this test the person is laying down.

Death- The Death Serum is typically administered by an Erudite person, its for death sentences.

Truth- The truth serum is the serum used by Candor, that forces someone to tell the truth. It is highly difficult to resist the serum

Peace- The peace serum is the Amity serum. Its effects are similar to marijuana, dizzyness, alteration of the mood to a positive one and a lack of inhibition. The bread in Amity's complex was laced with this serum while other factions' members lived there, which explains why they were able to maintain the faction's obligatory peace.

Fear- The fear serum is the Dauntless serum. It induces strong hallucinations called simulations that stimulate the fear center in the human brain. It creates life-like scenarios based off that person's fears, and doesn't stop till they calm themselves. It is used to not overcome fears, simply learn to navigate them.

The initiation process is different for every faction. Some factions are stricter than others regarding who, if anyone, is cut and made Factionless.

Divergent- Divergent are people who have traits from 2 or more factions. When in a simulation they are the only ones capable of being aware their in one. They are considered dangerous and often killed. People in power (leadership) and a fee civilians know of the existence of Divergents, and significantly less may help a Divergent in need

Factionless

Factionless is a status in which a person is not welcome into any faction. This is described as being homeless and even worse than death itself because the Factionless have to suffer. It is a common practice for Abnegation to give food and medical attention to the Factionless. It is not desired by any individual to ever be factionless. Some say they would rather die. The Factionless are completely impoverished and live in the ruined section of the city. It is said that the Factionless must partake in the worst jobs in Chicago. These jobs come from the other recognized factions, who only prefer them for humanitarian reasons, as these jobs provide a sense of purpose for the Factionless. They become factory workers, garbage truck drivers, janitors, or other low paying jobs. They do the work no one else wants to do. Unlike people in a faction who are paid in money, the Factionless are paid in food and clothes. Factionless are essentially the rejects from other factions, and most are Divergent

Eric Coutler

Age: Eric is 18 years old. Personality: He is cold, manipulative, malicious, extremely smart, indifferent, narcissistic. He is ruthless, especially when it comes to punishment, cunning and sassy. He's mean to almost everyone and he's cruel to initiates Past: Eric was born and raised in the Erudite faction but transferred to Dauntless when he was 16, by the end of initiation he was ranked 2nd. ric is 18 years old. He is cold, manipulative, malicious, extremely smart, indifferent, narcissistic. He is ruthless, especially when it comes to punishment. From there he became the youngest Dauntless leader, and works a side job of overseeing initiation/training. Traits: Eric describes his method of overcoming the fear simulations as using reason and rationality, hinting that he is level-headed under stress. When it comes to punishment he doesn't directly harm an initiate, however he will still put them in danger and situations that could likely kill them. This is because he punishes them for showing fear and weakness. (I.e: initiate afraid to grab a knife while others are still throwing knives, he will force the initiate to stand infront of the target while someone else throws the knives at the initiate aiming for the target behind them. or initiate quits a fight early, he'll force them to hang over a chasm with a raging river below, falling will kill the initiate but they must hang for 2 minutes) Appearance: Bluish grey eyes, brown hair styled in an undercut with the top gelled back, bold tattoos on his forearms and neck, guage peircings on both his ears and 2 peircings above his left eyebrow. Eric is 6ft tall, muscular with a powerful presence. Eric hates: He hates initiates, he hates Divergent, he hates Four, he hates to give encouragement or reassurance, he hates weakness, he hates people who don't listen, he hates waiting.

Four (Tobias)

Four- secretly known as Tobias Eaton, he came to Dauntless the same time Eric did, Four was ranked 1st by the end of initiation. Four works a security job where he watches the feeds of all security cameras located throughout the city, he also works as a trainer for initiates. He is 5'9ft, short brown hair, brown eyes, with a tattoo of all 5 faction symbols on his back. Both Eric and Four hate each other, however most of their interactions is playful banter, or serous discussions. During the first step of initiation, when the initiates jump off the building Four will wait beside the net, he will help them climb out of the net, and introduce them to the faction before helping the next initiate that jumps.

HOW FACTIONS ARE CHOSEN Each year, all 16 year old's are required to take an Aptitude Test. The purpose of the test is to discover a disposition towards one of the five traits of the five factions. It provides a good indication of what faction a person should choose based on his/her predominant characteristic. The next day in the Choosing Ceremony test-takers must choose which faction they will enter into. They can either leave their family and choose an entirely new faction or they can remain where they are. The aptitude test result should be taken into account but the decision is ultimately their choice.

THE APTITUDE TEST The test takes place at the school, in dedicated testing rooms. The test administrators consist of mostly Abnegation volunteers, but also include 1 Erudite & 1 Dauntless for the Abnegation-born students. Tests cannot be administered by a member of the same faction as the test-taker. No preparation for the test is allowed. Electrodes connected to a computer are attached to both the student and the test administrator, and the student is then given a serum to drink. This connects them to a simulation. The simulation provides a series of scenarios which the student must react to. Each stage, monitored by the administrator, should eliminate at least one or more of the factions, ultimately eliminating at least four factions and leaving one single faction as the result. (In the rare case a test proves inconclusive, with the elimination of only three or less factions, the taker is a Divergent.)

Dauntless pt3

Travel- Dauntless of ages 10 and older travel by jumping on and off moving trains. For work they will travel by a truck related to the work. The Dauntless compound is located is a massive cavern under the city, part of the compound including living quarters are aboveground within Skyscrapers above the compound. During initiation initiates will stay in the underground portion of the compound. Dauntless dorms for initiates consists of a single room housing 12 beds, along with a communal bathroom and showers. There's one dorm for Dauntless born and a second for transfers. Training/initiation- Training lasts 3 months initiates will start. Physical is the first month, throughout they are trained how to use guns, throw knives, how to fight along with vigorous workout routines. throughout the process, each day 6 initiates will be separated into 3 1v1 fights, the fight does not end until 1 or both opponents are unable to fight, and then the next round begins. Emotional is the 2nd month, initiates are put into a simulation where they face their fears. They are not aware it is only a simulation, and have to calm themselves to get out. Mental, is the final 2 weeks initiates are put into their fear landscapes (Put in a room because this is the only simulation where the person will move around while in the simulation), which reaches for every fear within the person subjected to it and creates a simulation in which they must face each one, they are still unaware it isn't real. Throughout all the training Dauntless born, and those who transferred to Dauntless are trained separately but are ranked together, after the final week of training the lowest 10 initiates are removed and become factionless. The new Dauntless members will then choose their job, the order of choosing will go from 1st place and down, each job has limited openings so the last few typically get unwanted jobs.

Dauntless pt4

Events: After the first month of training/initiation families of initiates from within the faction and from other factions will gather within the compound to hang out with their kids for a day. For initiates who transferred from another faction, this will be the last time they get to see their family.

Also after the 1st month: Capture the Flag- Initiates are woken up in the middle of the night, giving tactical gear to change into and taken to the train tracks. Once they're finally on the train, Four or Eric will then explain they are going to play capture the flag. They will use paintball guns as ammunition, and are separated into two teams, with Eric as one team leader and Four as the other. They will then ride the train and hop off at an abandoned amusement park, after 15 minutes of hiding their flag (which glows in the dark) the teams will then fight to capture the enemy flag. If you're hit by a paintball pellet, you're out.

Dauntless government: There are 5 leaders. Eric (18), Max (34), Zane (25), Hanna (28) and Riden (31). Dauntless is the only faction to house weapons and for its members to almost always have weapons. However they, nor anyone else in the city has tanks or missiles. Erudite produces and designs weapons that Dauntless use.

Geography

The Amity faction is located on farms surrounding the parameter of the city both inside and outside the fence. Amity handles all agriculture and food making.

The other 4 factions reside within the run-down city.
