Baldwin IV (1161-1185), known as the Leper King, was King of Jerusalem from 1174 until his death in 1185. His contemporaries and later historians admired him for his strength of will and dedication to the Latin Kingdom in the face of debilitating leprosy.

Baldwin probably contracted the disease in his early years from a court servant; in any case, in the 21st century, half of leprosy patients have no clear history of exposure to the disease," he adds.
