Yumichika wears the standard Shinigami uniform, secured with some customizations. The orange garment sits on top of the uniform at the neck, which covers most of the chest. Yumichika has colorful feathers on the eyelashes of his right eye and eyebrow. He has shiny skin, purple eyes, and black hair that reaches his jaw, which, combined with the feathers, gives him a somewhat feminine appearance. Before he joined the Gotei 13, he wore a simple kimono with a flower pattern on it, did not wear feathers over his eyes, and had his hair tied back in a loose ponytail.

Seventeen months after Aizen's defeat, Yumichika sports a similar hairstyle as before, though his braids now hang down the right side of his face. Yumichika was Ikkaku Madarame's friend even before Kenpachi Zaraki became captain of the Gotei. The two used to travel around Rukongai together, looking for battles. Until the day Ikkaku fought Kenpachi and lost.
