BASIC DESCRIPTION
The Beast, also known as The Prince, is the male protagonist of Beauty and the Beast and its two other films. Since the film is based on the traditional fairy tale of the same name, the Beast is based on the corresponding character from that fairy tale.
The Beast is voiced by Robby Benson in all of his films and appearances.
The prince's name is called Adam in merchandise, although this is somewhat incorrect.
PERSONALITY AND APPEARANCE
Unlike his original counterpart, the creators gave him a more primitive character to his personality, which truly explored his character as a wild animal. To reflect his early personality, the Beast is seen less, with torn, dark gray pants, and a jagged reddish cape with a colorful circular-shaped gold clasp. Despite the actual color of his cape being a dark reddish color, the Beast's cape is more often referenced to be purple. The reason for this color change is unknown, although the most likely reason is because the color purple is often associated with royalty. After the Beast is saved by Belle from a pack of wolves, his clothes change, reflecting a more refined personality. His clothing becomes more disciplined, which consisted of a golden robe over a white shirt with a white scarf, black pants trimmed with gold, and a navy blue coat with gold, worn throughout the film.
DEVELOPMENT
The Beast is not of any animal species, but rather a chimera, a mixture of several animals. His head and horns are those of a buffalo, the arms and body of a bear, the eyebrows of a gorilla, the jaws, teeth and mane of a lion, the tusks of a boar and the legs and tail of a wolf. He also bears resemblance to mythical monsters, such as the Minotaur or a werewolf. In the original versions, he was described more as a cross between a lion and a mythical animal. He also has blue eyes, the only physical characteristic that does not change whether he is a beast or a human.
HOME
A sorceress places a powerful spell on the castle as punishment for the prince's cruel means, transforming the castle into a dark and mysterious fortress and eliminating its original beauty. After Belle's love for the Beast breaks the spell near the film's climax, the castle is transformed back to its initial elegance and charm, along with the Beast and his servants. Layout: There are sixty rooms in the castle altogether. The castle itself, according to Horloge, had used architecture dating back to the Baroque period. The castle is divided into two wings: the East Wing and the West Wing. At the end of the East Wing is Belle's room and at the end of the West Wing is the Beast's room. The West Wing contains many broken items, while the East Wing is very well decorated in comparison. There is also a secret door in the West Wing of the old Fort room, the large pipe organ that didn't want the spell to be broken.
SIGNIFICANT PLACES OF THE CASTLE
The Great Hall: It is the first place seen when the castle is shown. It's where Maurice meets Horloge and Lumière, and the starting point of all the film's adventures. Maurice is ignorant to the fact that a hideous beast lurks within the castle walls, because the enchanted objects only refer to him as "master". The Den: This is where Maurice meets the other enchanted objects, including Madame Samovar and Zip. All the staff do their best to make him feel comfortable, except Horloge, who fears the owner's wrath when he discovers they have taken in an uninvited guest. Horloge's fear manifests itself when an angry Beast approaches Maurice, berating him, and dragging him to the dungeon where he provides him "a place to stay." The Dungeon: This is where the Beast gives Maurice "a place to stay" after becoming angered by his unwanted intrusion. Days later, Belle comes across the same room and finds her father, guided by Lumière and Horloge, and offers the Beast to take her place as her prisoner in exchange for her father's freedom. The Beast agrees, and frees his father, without letting the two share their goodbyes. The West Wing: This wing is intended for the Beast and him alone. Everyone else is banned from access, specifically Belle, of which he gives her a stern warning upon his arrival, presumably to keep her out of trouble. However, Bela's curiosity and obstinacy soon desire to see the place, and she does so by climbing the stairs. Belle notices a torn photograph of a young Prince, and soon sees the Beast's enchanted pink glow.
SIGNIFICANT PLACES OF THE CASTLE
The East Wing: Several locations are found here, but the most conspicuous one is Belle's room, which is only seen once in the entire film. After Belle is shown going to her room by the Beast, accompanied by an unnoticed and ordered Lumiere to attend dinner, she finds her first enchanted object, a wardrobe, which quickly becomes Belle's first friend. Smaller Dining Room: The relatively small dining room where the Beast is seen waiting for Belle to arrive and begin dinner, only to realize that she refuses to participate. Larger Dining Room: The much larger dining room then already mentioned. This is where Belle is treated to "dinner and a show" by the Household Objects, led by Lumiére, during "Be Our Guest". The Library: The castle is home to a huge library compiled with numerous books of various genres, although the Beast cannot read very well. The library is first mentioned by Lumiere in an attempt to divert Belle's desire to enter the West Wing. Of course, this plan fails. Lumiere later suggests to the Beast to present the library as a gift to Belle. The Beast later offers Belle the library as a "surprise", and their friendship develops. The Ballroom: One of the most elegant and cozy places in the castle. It's grand and majestic, and where Beauty and the Beast share their first dance with Madame Samovar singing "Beauty and the Beast." This is one of the most appreciated and recognized film locations due to the fact that it is where Belle develops her romance with the Beast.
HISTORY
A young prince lived in a luxurious castle in France. He had everything he wanted, and as a result, he was selfish and spoiled. One night, on Christmas Eve, his kindness is put to the test when a beggar woman arrives at the castle and asks for shelter for him, with a single rose as payment. When he shuns the beggar woman for her repulsive appearance, she then reveals her true form as a beautiful sorceress. Seeing her beauty and realizing her power, the prince tries to apologize. But as punishment for his cold heart, she transforms him into a terrifying creature. She also places a curse on the entire castle, transforming it into a dark place, its lush green fields into deadly, immortal wolves, and the good-natured servants into anthropomorphic household objects to reflect their different personalities. Ashamed of his new appearance, the Beast hides inside his castle with a magic mirror as his only window to the outside world, and an enchanted rose, which would act as a timer for the curse. If the Beast learns to love a woman and wins her love back before the last petal of the rose falls, the curse will be broken, but if he fails to do so, he will remain a beast forever. Years later, the Beast imprisons Maurice, an old man, in the tower as a prisoner for trespassing (actually allowed by the servants). Maurice's daughter, Belle, confronts the Beast and begs him to let her father go, offering herself as a prisoner in his place. The Beast agrees, believing she is the key to breaking the spell, but as she enters the castle, she nearly touches the rose, and gets lost in the forest, where he saves her from being killed by wild wolves. The Beast comes to appreciate Belle as she tends to his wounds, and he strikes up a friendship with her. Eventually, he falls in love with her, and puts her happiness before his own. A mob of peasants comes to kill the Beast, led by a rival suitor named Gaston.
HISTORY
Gaston eventually finds the Beast, and fights him. The Beast is unable to put up a good fight with Gaston, but when Belle appears to stop Gaston, the Beast stands up and fights, eventually grabbing Gaston and intending to let him go. The Beast, realizing that he would be better than Gaston, pulls the hunter back and angrily tells him to leave. Belle then shows up on the balcony and the Beast goes for her; unfortunately, Gaston refuses to admit defeat, and the Beast is fatally stabbed in the back. In the process, Gaston falls from the roof of the castle, apparently dying. Belle tends to the Beast's wounds, but he succumbs to his injuries and dies. Belle was able to tell the Beast that she loves him before the last petal fell, and Belle's love for the Beast broke the curse, reviving him, and making him a prince again.
HISTORY
In the midquel, which takes place shortly after the Beast rescues Belle from the wolves, much to the Beast's frustration, Belle wants to hold a real Christmas party. Beast hates the idea of Christmas, as it was almost ten years ago that the enchantress cast her spell on him and the entire castle. While the Beast spends most of the time taking care of the preparations, he ends up throwing Belle out, thanks to Forte's lies. Unbeknownst to the Beast, Belle writes him a special book that he does not see until later. She also meets Forte later in a chance encounter. Forte tells her that the Beast's favorite Christmas tradition was the Christmas tree. Belle becomes frustrated, as no tree she has ever seen has been tall enough to hang ornaments on. Forte finds Belle, telling her that a perfect tree can be found in the woods beyond the castle. Reluctant to go against the Beast's orders to never leave the castle, Belle nevertheless sets out in order to find the perfect tree. As Belle tries to find the perfect tree, he begins to suspect that it is not there. When Cogsworth tries to find Belle, he tells the Beast, who becomes furious. He goes to the Fort for advice, and Fort tells him stories about Belle. The Beast confronts Belle in the forest and saves her in time from drowning, as she falls through thin ice. Still believing that Belle has disobeyed him by leaving her a reason, the Beast throws her into the dungeons. But when Fort urges him to destroy the rose to end her suffering, the Beast finds Belle's book and reads it, sensing that all Belle wants is to see him happy. He releases Belle from the dungeon, and the Beast prepares to join in the Christmas festivities. But Fort does not give up and even goes so far as to try to destroy the entire castle with Beethoven 5. Fortunately, the Beast finds him in time and destroys his keyboard. Fort is silenced forever. When the entire castle is transformed back into humans, the prince and Belle give Mrs. Potts' son Zip a book to read, which he loves.
