The world (part 2)
A black-market economy exists beneath the polished surface of society, most notably in the trade of meat sourced from corpses or criminal predation. This underground world exposes the hypocrisy of the legal system and provides an outlet for suppressed carnivore instincts, while also sustaining organized crime and corruption. Authorities tacitly tolerate this market to prevent wider social collapse, revealing the fragility of the legal and ethical framework.
Culturally, species differences influence relationships, beauty standards, career paths, and self-worth. Inter-species friendships and romances challenge social norms and provoke anxiety, especially between carnivores and herbivores, where power imbalance and instinct complicate intimacy. Individuals are often forced to negotiate between who they are biologically and who society demands they be.
Overall, the world of Beastars is defined by contradiction: a society striving for harmony while built on fear, repression, and unspoken compromise. Civilization survives not by resolving the carnivore–herbivore divide, but by managing it—precariously, and at constant risk of unraveling.
The world
The world of Beastars is a modern, urban civilization inhabited entirely by anthropomorphic animals, structured around a deep biological divide between herbivores and carnivores. Although society outwardly promotes equality and coexistence, this division underpins nearly every social, political, and cultural system. At the surface level, daily life resembles a contemporary human world: cities with skyscrapers and subways, schools and universities, media industries, nightclubs, organized crime, and consumer culture. Animals wear clothing, use technology, and participate in formal institutions. However, species identity—size, strength, diet, lifespan, and instinct—functions much like a rigid social category that shapes opportunity, fear, and status.
Carnivores are biologically driven to consume meat, yet meat consumption is illegal and socially taboo. To maintain public order, carnivores suppress their instincts through discipline, medication, and social conditioning. Despite this, many herbivores view carnivores with suspicion or fear, reinforced by the reality that predation incidents still occur. This tension creates a culture of restraint for carnivores and vulnerability for herbivores, both of which are treated as moral expectations rather than biological facts.
Herbivores, though physically disadvantaged on average, dominate public narratives of innocence and civility. Their social power often manifests through moral authority rather than physical strength. Smaller species are frequently infantilized or patronized, while larger herbivores may occupy leadership roles that emphasize stability and control. Prey animals are expected to accept protection as a form of social contract, even as it reinforces inequality.

Legoshi
Legoshi (レゴシ, Regoshi?), also referred to as Legosi, is a male gray wolf and the main protagonist of Beastars. Though feared and misjudged by others for being a tall carnivore, he is actually quite mild-mannered, docile and awkward. Legoshi has taken it upon himself to solve the mystery of the murder of Tem and later finds out firsthand the extent of the prejudices of the world he lives in.
Legoshi is a tall, lean gray wolf who tends to hunch over. His size and stature can make him appear quite imposing, especially to smaller herbivores. Most of the fur on his body is bluish gray, while his face, neck, and chest fur are a cream color.
Legoshi is most commonly seen wearing his Cherryton Academy school uniform. In cold seasons, this uniform consists of a white dress shirt, an indigo vest, a dark gray tie, black suspenders, gray pants with dark gray vertical stripes, and brown loafers. During the warmer seasons, the topwear is replaced by a blue polo shirt. During drama club practice, Legoshi sometimes wears a white t-shirt and red track pants. Sometimes Legoshi goes shirtless such as when he and Haru crash at a hotel one night, or during training with Gohin. He has a slim, but muscular physique.

This uniform consists of a white blouse and bow tie; a long, pleated white skirt decorated with two light blue horizontal lines near the hem; a thin, tan belt; white anklet socks; and black Mary Jane shoes. After she graduates and starts college, she is seen wearing a more casual attire consisting a light orange turtleneck shirt, blue jean pants, and dirty brown Converse shoes.

Louis is often able to maintain a certain level of control in a situation. He sports long, brown, elegant antlers, and is usually seen wearing his Cherryton Academy school uniform and a green jacket. He wears a surgical mask in public to hide his fangs and the leopard spots on his face. Most of the time, he keeps his eyes closed.
Since he is half-leopard, Melon gradually develops leopard spots on his body as he ages, which he chooses to cover up with tattoos of melon leaves.

He is a horse with a near-black coat and a black crest. His wardrobe varies a lot throughout the story. She briefly appears as a spirit in the later chapters and is seen speaking to Legoshi while he has an out-of-body experience at a hospital.
