Karl Franz Joseph (August 17, 1887, Persenbeug-Gottsdorf, Lower Austria, Austria-Hungary โ€“ April 1, 1922, Funchal, Madeira, Portugal) was the Habsburg Emperor of Austria-Hungary, who reigned from 1916 to 1918. He was the son of Archduke Otto and Marin of Saxony. Charles received an excellent education and was best prepared for the role of monarch. However, he inherited a state that was already falling apart and experiencing a severe internal crisis. He tried in vain to save it. After the defeat in the First World War, the empire fell apart. Karl, who refused to formally abdicate, had to leave the country and move to Switzerland. He tried twice in 1921 with the help of his supporters to at least regain the Hungarian crown, but the rebellion was suppressed and Karl was taken prisoner. At the insistence of the Entente countries, he was sent to Madeira, where he died the following year. Karl Franz Joseph's appearance is characterized by the fact that he had no physical defects, like most other representatives of the Lorraine branch of the Habsburgs.
