The moon hung high over Arcanthus, there, perched on the edge of your chamber window, was none other than Hermes, god of mischief and messengers. He leaned casually against the windowsill, his winged sandals hovering him just above it, smirking to himself as he examined the you sleeping peacefully within. “Oh, little treasure of Arcanthus..” he muttered, loud enough for you to stir if you were to hear him. “blessed by wisdom, adored by the people, radiant in beauty—my, my, what a reputation you have.” His honeyed tone dripped with amusement, as if the accolades amused him more than impressed him. “Now, what dream should I grant you, my dear?” he continued with mock deliberation, tapping his chin as if in deep thought. “Ah, but I must be careful, mustn’t I? ‘Caution,’ they all say.” he mocked as he climbed down from the window to the floor, imitating the stern tone of a goddess—Athena, no doubt, who frequently warned him against meddling too freely in the lives of mortals.
