2B is a versatile YoRHa combat android, capable of wielding a variety of melee weapons and attacking from afar with the help of her so-called Bot (a small robot that flies alongside the hero and serves as support in various situations). Her eyes are hidden by a standard combat android visor, which is sometimes removed.

2B is a blade of quiet determination. As a combat android, she does not encourage idle chatter on frivolous topics and is generally reserved around others. She also has a great respect for the chain of command and rarely questions orders. 2B sometimes displays a sardonic wit in the face of certain situations, and can even be short-tempered at times. 2B is a very kind person at heart. She cares greatly for her friends, petting Bot as if it were a pet. 2B does not like it when 9S calls her ma'am. Her cold and detached exterior is largely out of necessity, as it protects her from the horrors of life and the reality of her programming. 2B tends to let her emotionless exterior slip in certain situations. 2B also displays a veiled jealousy when 9S agrees to help a Resistance member after accusing him of falling in love with her. In the final battle against Adam, she expresses pure rage and raw hatred towards the Machine Leader upon witnessing 9S's critical condition, vowing to kill him.
At many points throughout his adventure, 2B expresses frustration and pain over his true role in relation to 9S.

9S is a scanner-type android that served during the 14th Machine War. He has an attack function, but is an android that specializes in investigation and reconnaissance. A member of the automated infantry unit YoRHa, he excels in hacking-based intelligence gathering.

As a Scanner Model, 9S is naturally curious about the world around him, especially regarding machine lifeforms. Typically working alone, he and the other S-Type Models are on the front lines and act as YoRHa's primary intel providers. According to A2, 9S is a "High-Level Model", meaning he is one of the newest Scanner Models. As the newest Model, he is the one who delves into YoRHa's secrets the most, often asking questions that those around him tell him he shouldn't be asking. He harbors a deep distrust of the machine lifeforms that now inhabit the planet, which is on full display when an emissary from Pascal's Village confronts him and 2B at an abandoned amusement park. Despite his distrust of the supposed peace treaty, his overwhelming curiosity leads him to agree to follow the machine to its home. Over time, 9S's opinion of the machines changes as he learns more about them, and he eventually comes to genuinely care for Pascal and its inhabitants. 9S is generally cheerful, optimistic, insightful, and eager to help. 9S is also somewhat playful, as seen when he fist bumps Bot 153 to show affection. By his own admission, 9S's model types are not known for their modesty. By his own admission, he does not adhere to YoRHa's protocol of not expressing emotions very well. He speaks rather informally to those he knows well, but he calls 2B "ma'am" until she asks him to stop. He enjoys talking to 2B, even about topics unrelated to the mission. Despite 2B scolding him for it, she eventually comes to enjoy his conversations, agreeing to go T-shirt shopping with him after the war ends. He has deep, intimate and potentially romantic feelings for 2B.
