His lieutenant is Rangiku Matsumoto. He previously served as the 3rd seat of the 10th Division under Isshin Shiba. He has turquoise eyes and short, spiky white hair, which constantly attracts attention in the Human World.[2][3] He wears the standard sleeveless haori of a captain with a green sash over his shoulder, held by a round, star-shaped clip that holds his scabbard. Tōshirō sometimes wears his tabi. He is relatively young by Shinigami standards, appearing childish in appearance. In the human world, he wears a black short-sleeved shirt and grey pants, and also wore the Karakura High School uniform.

Before Tōshirō became a captain, his hair was not as spiky, with a few spikes here and there. He also wore the standard Shinigami outfit, but with the addition of the 10th Division emblem on the left side of his outfit.[4]

Seventeen months after Aizen's defeat, shortly after Ichigo regained his Shinigami powers, Tōshirō is seen sporting a hairstyle similar to the one he had before becoming a Shinigami and a long turquoise scarf.[5][6] The green sash has been replaced with a thin chain, but the star-shaped clip remains.[7]

After training for an unspecified amount of time in preparation for the fight against the Wandenreich, Tōshirō's hair appears to have grown longer, with his bangs now reaching past his eyes despite being held back by his newly acquired bandana. He also appears taller than before, with his robes hanging loosely from his body.[8] Hitsugaya is generally mature and serious, in contrast to his carefree lieutenant Rangiku Matsumoto. Despite their personality differences, he and Rangiku appear to be very close. Tōshirō is easily irritated by others who slack off or draw unnecessary attention to themselves, such as when he leads a team of Shinigami at Ichigo Kurosaki's school.[2] Hitsugaya hates anything he considers childish, and has also been described as being close to a child, such as an elementary school child. He is overly protective of Momo Hinamori due to them being old childhood friends. Hitsugaya dislikes summer and warm weather in general.

Toshiro's favorite foods are watermelon and amanatto, but he dislikes dried persimmons. During his childhood in Rukongai, he was so skilled at spinning tops that he became the local undefeated champion. He works very hard, but his motive seems to be that if he finishes quickly, he can return to his afternoon nap. He believes in the saying "children who sleep well grow well", and hopes to grow up quickly, a wish shared by his subordinates. Naturally, they do not voice this fact in front of him, because even after regularly practicing this proverb for so long, he has not actually grown.[10]

Hitsugaya is commonly made fun of by other Shinigami in Soul Society, as well as his enemies, but he tolerates these jokes and continues to carry out his duties. Hitsugaya has developed a cold attitude towards most people. While he gets angry at jokes, he does not take action against anyone who insults him unless they are his enemies. The only things he cannot stand are being addressed as anything other than Captain, or using his name inappropriately, as he has worked very hard to attain the rank. The only people who actually call him by his name are Ichigo, who he constantly reminds to address him properly, and Hinamori, who is the only person allowed to get away with not addressing him properly. Hinamori tends to call him "Hitsugaya-kun", and both she and Ukitake sometimes use "Shiro-chan" (Flag of Japan シロちゃん), a nickname meaning "Little White" ("Snowball" in the English manga). Additionally, Karin and her friends call him by his first name, and he has never reprimanded them for it. Much to his chagrin, he often receives candy and other foods from Jushiro Ukitake because "Jushirō" and "Toshiro" sound similar and because they both have white hair, making them both "Shiro-chan".

During his fight with Gin Ichimaru, Ichimaru notes that Hitsugaya is the incarnation of a heavenly guardian who will reincarnate every few centuries.[11] Hitsugaya hails from the Junrinan district of the first district of western Rukongai.[12] There, he lived with his grandmother and Momo Hinamori. As a young child, Hitsugaya was a bit of a tomboy who enjoyed eating watermelon and teasing Hinamori. She would call him "Squirrel-chan", and he would respond by calling her "silly Momo". The two were close friends, and Hitsugaya, despite being younger and shorter than his friend, always felt he had to protect her.[13]

Even at a young, untrained age, Hitsugaya could hear the call of his sword spirit, Hyōrinmaru. Despite this, he never told anyone about it and could not pinpoint what was happening other than to assume it was a recurring dream.[14]

Hitsugaya is a master swordsman, able to use his height to effectively counter and outclass his opponents. His mastery of swordsmanship is demonstrated by the fact that he is the youngest Shinigami captain; therefore, he is one of the youngest Shinigami to achieve Bankai. His mastery of swordsmanship is great enough that he rarely even uses his Shikai in battle, which he wields with great skill. Instead, he relies on the sealed form of Hyōrinmaru, only using his Shikai or Bankai when the going gets tough.[23][24][25]

Hakuda Master: Although he usually relies on his Zanpakutō in battle, Hitsugaya was able to knock down a regret-driven Hinamori with a single strike while in mid-air.[26] Shunpo Expert: Hitsugaya is highly skilled in Shunpo. In battle, he is able to block and dodge dangerous attacks on numerous occasions.

Kidō Expert: Hitsugaya is highly skilled in Kidō, and is capable of performing high-level Kidō without casting an incantation. For example, during his fight with Hyōrinmaru, he used a level 63 Kidō without casting an incantation.[27]

Child Prodigy: Perhaps Hitsugaya's most astonishing trait is his intelligence and natural talent. He is the most gifted child prodigy in Soul Society to emerge after Gin Ichimaru, entering the Shinobi Academy on his first try despite his young age, graduating in one year with the highest writing and practical scores in each of his classes, and joining the Gotei 13 shortly after.

Renji and Iba called him a child genius, while Ichimaru called him the embodiment of the "heavenly white angel that blesses Soul Society once every century". In terms of intelligence, Hitsugaya is also impressive. He was the first to suspect Gin Ichimaru of treason, and saw more in Rukia's execution than was being told. Shunsui, one of the strongest Shinigami in history, states that due to his genius, Hitsugaya may surpass him in 100 years.[28]Expert Strategist and Tactician: Despite his age, Hitsugaya has great instinct and intuition in battle. He is generally aware of everything in his presence, and can also see through most deceptions. For example, he discerned that there was more to Gin Ichimaru than he seemed, though he was not yet perceptive enough to realize that it was all part of Aizen's plot. He is also a strong analyst, able to deduce the basic mechanics of an opponent's attacks and quickly understand their strengths and weaknesses to better counter them.[29] As a captain, he is a capable leader. He is tasked with missions by Captain-Commander Yamamoto many times to lead teams in the Human World to deal with threats. For example, Hitsugaya led a team sent by Soul Society that reinforced Ichigo's group against the Arrancar.[30] In battle, he has great instincts against incoming danger, such as his reactions to Harribel's initial attack after being released.[31] After losing his Bankai to the Sternritter, Hitsugaya was forced to come up with several creative and unorthodox methods of using his Shikai's limited capabilities, such as combining the powers of his Zanpakutō with Haineko Matsumoto's to create vacuum ice blades, a wall of thin intertwined ice threads, and even a field of freezing fog.[32][33][34]

Immense Spiritual Power: Tōshirō's spiritual power has the same effect as his Zanpakutō, as it is the elemental representative of ice. His spiritual pressure is considered to be very high and "cold". Even before he became a Shinigami, his spiritual pressure was immense and uncontrollable, similar to Ichigo's, causing people around him to freeze, namely his grandmother, who lived with him at the time. This cold spiritual power reflects his attitude. He is also the youngest Shinigami to ever achieve his Bankai. He even had visions of Hyōrinmaru's spirit before he achieved his Shikai or entered the Shinobi Academy.[35] He is able to hide his presence well; he surprises Hinamori and Matsumoto several times with his sudden appearances, causing them to complain about him "sneaking up" on them.[36] His spiritual pressure is white in color.[37]

Immense Durability: Despite his youthful and thin appearance, Tōshirō is a resilient fighter. He survived attacks from Shaolong Koufang at 20 percent of his actual strength.[38] He is also able to continue fighting after a direct piercing attack from Bazz-B.[39] Materialized Form - Dragon Form: Hyōrinmaru's spirit takes the form of a gigantic icy blue serpentine ice dragon with large wings and a booming voice. When Hitsugaya's soul was partially Hollowfied by the Hollowfication Pill, Hyōrinmaru's appearance changed dramatically into that of a massive Western ice dragon with large wings, thick legs, a dark and muscular underbelly, a vaulted neck with jagged plates running down its back, and a stern face with teeth covering its mouth.
