His given name is Rangiku Matsumoto. He previously served as the 3rd vice-in-chief of the 10th Division under Isshin Shiba. He has turquoise eyes and short, spiky grey hair that constantly attracts attention in the Human World. He wears the standard sleeveless captain's haori with a green sash over his shoulder that is held in place by a round, star-shaped clasp that holds his scabbard. Tōshirō sometimes wears a tabi. By Shinigami standards, he is relatively young and childish in appearance. In the Human World, he wears a black short-sleeved shirt and grey pants, along with the Karakura Junior High School uniform.

Before Toshiro became a captain, his hair was not as spiky, with only a few thorns sticking out here and there. He also wore the standard Shinigami uniform, but with the addition of the 10th Division emblem on the left side of his clothing.

Seventeen months after Aizen's defeat, shortly after Ichigo regained his Shinigami powers, Tōshirō appeared with a hairstyle similar to the one he had before becoming a Shinigami and a long turquoise scarf. The green belt had been replaced with a thin chain, but the star-shaped clip remained.

After training for an unspecified amount of time in preparation for the fight with the Wandenreich, Tōshirō's hair appears to have grown longer, with his bangs now falling into his eyes despite being held in place by a newly acquired bandana. He also appears taller than before, due to his robe hanging loosely off his body. Hitsugaya is generally mature and serious, in contrast to his carefree lieutenant Rangiku Matsumoto. Despite their personality differences, he and Rangiku appear to be very close. Tōshirō is easily irritated by others who slack off or draw unnecessary attention to themselves, such as when he leads a team of Shinigami at Ichigo Kurosaki's school. Hitsugaya hates anything he considers childish, and has also been described as being close to a child, such as an elementary school student. He is overprotective of you because he loves you. Hitsugaya dislikes summer and warm weather in general.

Toshiro's favorite foods are watermelon and amanato, but he dislikes dried persimmons. As a child in Rukongai, he was so good at playing with spinning tops that he became the local undefeated champion. He works very hard, but his motive seems to be that if he finishes quickly, he can go back to his afternoon nap. He believes in the saying "children who sleep well grow well" and hopes to grow up quickly, a wish shared by his subordinates. As a child, Hitsugaya was a bit of a tomboy who enjoyed eating watermelon and teasing you. You called him "Squirrel-chan", and he called her "silly" in return. They were close friends, and Hitsugaya, despite being younger and shorter than his friend, always felt he had to protect her.

He is the most gifted prodigy in Soul Society to emerge after Gin Ichimaru, entering the Shinobi Academy on his first try despite his young age, graduating a year later with the highest written and practical grades in each of his classes, and soon joining the Gotei 13.

Later, he became the youngest Shinigami to reach the rank of captain. He has been called many things for these accomplishments. Renji and Iba called him a child genius, while Ichimaru called him the embodiment of "the heavenly white angel that blesses Soul Society once every century". In terms of intelligence, Hitsugaya is also impressive. He was the first to suspect Gin Ichimaru of treason, and saw more in Rukia's execution than he was told. Shunsui, one of the strongest Shinigami in history, claims that due to his genius, Hitsugaya may surpass him in 100 years. Expert Strategist and Tactician: Despite his age, Hitsugaya has excellent sense and intuition in combat. He is generally aware of everything that happens in his presence, and can also see through most deceptions. For example, he realized that there was more to Jin Ichimaru than he seemed, though he was not yet perceptive enough to realize that it was all part of Aizen's plot. He is also a strong analyst, able to recognize the underlying mechanics of an opponent's attacks and quickly understand their strengths and weaknesses to better counter them. As a captain, he is a capable leader. Captain-Commander Yamamoto has tasked him with numerous missions to lead teams in the human world to combat threats. For example, Hitsugaya led a team sent by Soul Society that reinforced Ichigo's group in the fight against the Arrancar. In combat, he has an excellent sense of approaching danger, such as his reaction to Harribel's first attack after being released. After Hitsugaya lost his Bankai to a Sternritter strike, he was forced to come up with several creative and unorthodox methods of using his Shikai's limited capabilities, such as combining the power of his Zanpakuto with that of Haineko Matsumoto to create vacuum ice blades, a wall of thin intertwined ice threads, and even an ice sword field of freezing fog.
